WILLIE G. VALTER, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,489, dated April 8, 1884.
Application file-d September'l'i, 1883. (No-model.)
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, V. G. \VALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Eenrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and 'use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1. of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective. Fig. 4 is also a detail in perspective, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same before being bent into shape.
This invention has relation to lamp-extinguishers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the collar, 12 the baseplate, 0 the hinged cap, and d the wick-tube, of a lamp-burner.
My object is to provide an attachment for the wiclctubes of kerosene-lamps whereby the flame may be conveniently and quickly extingnished without resorting to blowing, which is dangerous and often causes explosions of the gas in the oil cup or chamber.
The extinguisher consists of arectangularform open hood, e, attached to the wick-tube, and adapted to be swung over the flame in close proximity to the wick in the tube to extinguish the flame.
I form a slotted frame, f, to fit over the wick-tube, and provide it with legs h h, that rest on the base-plate at the ends of the wicktube, and support the frame f sufficiently near the top of the tube to permit'the hood e, which is pivoted to the frame f, to be turned over the mouth of the wick-tube, for the purpose before explained. The hood at one end has an inwardly-turned arm, 13, that prevents the hood from falling too far back when open, by coming in contact with the front face of the tube, and also prevents it from passing too far forward when closed, by coming in contact with the same face of the wick tube when closed. At this same end of the hood, or the other end, if desired, an operating-wire, 7c, is-
hinged, and passes through a perforation or slot, Z, in the base-plata so that the attachmentmay be operated from the outside of the lamp. The hinged cap covers the attachment.
The device is cheap, simple, and will effectually extinguish the flame of a lamp. It may be applied to any lamp now in use, or may be manufactured with the burner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lampextinguisher, the combination, with the slotted frame f, constructed as de scribed, and provided with the outwardly-inclined legs h h andopposite end journals for the hood, of the rectangular hood 6, having its downward arms perforated -to receive the journals of the frame, and one of the arms provided with the stop 'i, and an eye for receiving the operating-rod k, the whole adapted to be applied to a lamp-burner, substan- WV. 0.
