EYE- PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 296,388, dated April 8, 1884-.
. Application filed July 24, 1883. (Model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, RUFUS CHOATE,WILL- IAllI H. Ronnnn, and ANDREW H. RAGAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements-in eye=protectors; and it consists in forming of proper material a protection to the eyes from the reflection of the suns rays on snow or ice, to prevent what is known as snow-blindness.
The object of our invention is to form a perfect and durable protection for the eyes of people who are exposed to the glare caused by sun shining on the snow and ice in the northern regions. Another object is to guide the person wearing our eye-shield in the desired direction by placing with the shield, and within easy range of the eyes, a compass or ch art. W'e attain these objects by means of the peculiar arrangement and construction of our device, which will be more fully pointed out and described in the specification and claims, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application, and forming partof the same, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention with compass in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shield or eye-protector, preferably of the shape shown; but any desired shape may be used.
Shield A is formed of fibrous pulp or a series of sheets of paper pressed into the desired shape, or may be formed of leather, light wood, or other material having the desired strength and lightness. In forming the shield A, the ends I) are perforated at c, as shown, for the purpose of attaching strings, by which the shield is held to the eyes. A recess, a, on the under face of shield A is formed in the edge of the same, to admit the nose of the wearer, by which the shield is held in place, and at the same time the shield rests on the bridge of 0 construction of the shield and the size and position of the slit or opening d.
The compass or chart 0 is placed on the upper face of the lower part of shield A at a point between the nose-rest a and the slit (1, and the purpose and object of said compass and chart is to guide and direct the wearer.
In stormy weather, to prevent snow or sleet from penetrating the shield, a glass cover or slide is placed over the slit d; or mica or isinglass may be used for the same purpose.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An eye-shield consisting of a projection shield formed of paper-pulp, adapted to fit and be secured to the face of the wearer above and below the eyes, said shield having a narrow horizontal front opening or slit, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
