UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON TOAY AND JOHN It. TOAY, OF MINERAL POINT, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED PACKING AND SHOW BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,367, dated April 8, 1884.
To all whom It may concern:
Be it known that we, SIMON TOAY and JOHN R. TOAY, citizens of the United States, residing at Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa and State of Wisconsin, have invented an Improvement in anew and useful Combined Packing and Show Box, (and we do hereby declare that it has notto our knowledge and belief been patented in any country, and that the same has not been in public use or on sale in the United States prior to this applieatiom) of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention isto furnish a I neat and convenient packing-box for the trade in garden'seeds and other articles put up in small packages or bottles, and an attractive and economical way of displaying the same for sale all in the same box.
It consists of two raisers, one fastened at each end on the inside and bottom of the box by one or more hinges. Said raisers have grooves running horizontally across them on e the inside, so that when raised they may receive trays containing the articles for exhibition, each tray, when placed in the raisers, being above and back of the other, no two trays being in the same vertical plane. ,The trays are the same length as the box, less the thickness of one of the raisers, and in width altogether equal to the width of the inside of the box. When not on display, the raisers are folded down in the bottom of the box and the trays placed on them, and the space then above the trays to be used for packing the goods.
Figure 1 represents the lid of the box open, with the raisers folded down in the bottom of the box and the trays placed on said raisers, as they would be when ready for shipping. Fig. 2 shows the raisers folded in the bottom of the box, thetrays removed, the grooves in the raisers, the cleat at the end of the box to keep the trays from shifting, also the cleat at the back and outside of the box to prevent the cover from going too far back. Fig. 3 shows the box open, the raisers up, and the grooves to receive the trays. Fig. 4 shows the box open, the raisers up, and the trays in place for display. Fig. 5 shows one of the trays by itself, divided into apartments, with a tongue at each end to slide into the grooves in the raisers.
Similar letters refer to similar part-s throughout the several views.
Application filed July 19, 1883. (Model.)
The box A may be made of any convenient width or depth adapted to the number and size of the trays O G O desired. A deep box will require longer raisers B, and when so made they may overlap each other when folded. In such case one raiser B may be fastened to a cleat, instead of to the bottom of the box, such clcat being at the end and bottom of the box, and just the thickness of the raiser B. The raisers are made in the most convenient form, about half the length of the box A. The wide end of one raiser is fastened by a hinge at the end, bottom, and inside of the box, and the other raiser is fastened in a simiilar way at the other end of the box. These raisers are made with grooves D, according to the number of trays O O desired. a repre sents a groove in the outside of the raiser B, to receive the cleat c. The cleat a is fastened on the inside and at the end of the box, to prevent the trays, when packed, from shifting. 7 5 The trays O O O are to be the length of the box on the inside, less the thickness of one of the raiser-s B. The bottoms of the trays at the ends project and form a tOllgll6, E,l3O fit in the grooves D. The trays are divided into as many apartments as desired, and in depth are equal to about one-half the depth of the box.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined packing and show box, A, the raisers B B, fastened at their ends to the bottom of the box, on the inside, and having grooves D D on their inside, adapted to reccive the tongues E E of the trays 0 when opened, as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a box, the raisers BB, having grooves D D on the inside and groove a on the outside, the raisers attached to the bottom and ends of the box on the inside, and adapted to be folded down to receive the trays O O in the box, or raised to support the tongues E E of the trays, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we 10:
have hereunto set our hands on this 18th day of May, 1883, in the presence of two witnesses.
