UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
RICHARD IV. JONES, OF SYItAGUSE, NEIV YORK.
HARNESS- ROSETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,178, dated April 1, 1884.-.
Application filed February 14, 18S-1. (No model.) I
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD IV. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Rosettes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates to rosettes for harness; and it consists in casting the base and loop integral and afterward applying a sheetnietal front or face-piece by upsetting its circumferential iiange in a groove in the basepiece, and the details of construction will be hereinafter fully explained.
' In the drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of the rosette complete. Fig. 2 is a transversesection. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the top of the base-piece. Fig. 4 is a perspective viewof the bottom of the basepiece. Fig. 5 is a plan ofthe filling-disk. Fig. 6 is a plan of the cap or face piece. Figs. and 8 are details in plan and perspective of a modication.
Like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the different views.
A is the base-plate, and it consists of a casu annulus, preferably with a recess, a, on its upper face, and with a narrow groove, l), on its underside near its periphery. The purpose of the recess on the upper or outer surface of this annular part A is to receive a flat sheet-metal disk, C, (shown in Fig. 5,) when it is desired to use such a disk. The object of the peripheral groove or recess on the under side of the part A is to receive the upset edge of the sheet-metal cap or face piece,'as will be more fully explained hereinafter. The piece A is also provided with an attachingloop, B, which is cast integral with the annular part, and the ends of this loop extend beyond the central vopening in the part A at each side. The cap or face piece Dis of sheet metal, substantially concave-convex in form, and it has downwardly projecting `flanged edges, the diameter inside of the flanges being made to correspond with the diameter of the annular base A, or so that it will exactly t over said base-piece. The danged edges of the cap are upset into the peripheral groove on the under side of the base A, thus making a smooth, neat finish without soldering. I prefer to use the illingpiece or disk C, which is fitted into the recess or rabhet a, and it may be secured thereto by tinning or brazing, if desired. This disk C may be stamped, so as to show the manufactureris name or other arbitrary marks on its under side.
The rosette made up as hereinbei'ore described is the preferred form of construction, although Isometimes omit the disk C, and Ican readily do so without departing from the spirit of my invention. The outer or cap piece may be ornamented in any desired manner, either by stamping or otherwise marking thereon a monogram, initial, or, in fact, any suitabledesign. The rosette may also be of any desired configuration or outline, and beV plated with gold, silver, nickel, or other precious metal.
By my improvement I am enabled to produce a cheap, neat, and durable ornament, which may be readily constructed, and soldering or brazing may be entirely dispensed with.
It is not absolutely essential that the basepiece and loop be made integral, as the annular part and loop may be cast separately and secured together in any well-known manner, as shown, for example, in Figs. 7 and 8.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A harness-rosette consisting of the annular base-piece, having a peripheral groove on its under side, and provided with an attaching-loop and an ornamental cap or face piece, with a circumferential tlange upset lin the groove in the base-piece, substantially as described.
2. In a harness-rosette, the combination of the base-piece A, having an annular recess on its upper surface, a' peripheral groove on its under side, and an attaching-loop cast integral therewith, with the disk C and the cap or face D, the circumferential ilange on the latter being upset in the groove on the under side of the base, as set forth.
In testimony Whereoi` I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD IV. JONES. Witnesses:
FRED. FRAZER, E. G. S. HIER.
