HASP-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,827, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed December 20, 1883. (ModeL) T 0 ct whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DUNCAN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in car-door locks, and has for its object to provide a simple and durable locking device. The mode of construction, as well as the manner of applying a common sealing device to it, will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figurel represents a perspective View of my device, and Fig. 2 a cross-section of the locking device.
In the figures, A represents a plate, which is secured to the car-door by means of a suitable staple, B. This staple also secures to the plate one end of a hasp, O, as seen in Fig. 1.
D represents a box which is secured to the car by means of bolts K K, which pass through the wood-work of the car and provided with nuts upon the inside. The box D is provided at one end with ears (1 d, between which is hinged a block, G. Upon the other end of said box is formeda standard, in which is a bolt-hole, J The block G is provided with a longitudinal slot, H. 1
F represents a bolt, which lies and slides upon the block G, having a longitudinal movement, one end taking into the opening J when the car-door is to be locked. A headed screw, I, passes up through the slot H and is firml embedded in theunder side of the bolt F. The head of the screw catches on the sides of the slot H, said slot serving as aguide for it, and also serving to retain it and the bolt to the block G. The block G has two openings, h and i, made through it-one, h, passing'through the block alone and behind the screw I when the bolt F is shoved up so as to catch into the standard E, and the other, i, passing through both block and bolt when the bolt is in the advanced position.
The hasp G is provided on itsloose end with two shoulders, at a. When it is desired to'lock the car-door, the loose end of the hasp is laid in an opening in the box made to receive it, and then the block G is closed down over it. The bolt F is then moved endwise until one end catches in the opening J in the standard E. A thin strip of sheet metal is now inserted in the opening h, and a wire is passed through the hole i. The sheet metal passes behind the screw and prevents it from moving backward to free the bolt, and the wire, passing through both block. and bolt, secures them firmly together. The sheet-metal piece and the wire may now be properly sealed, so that the lock will show evidences of being tampered with in case any one attempts to open it short of its destination. It will readily be seen that either or both of these modes of fastening may be used at one time.
The bolt may be drawn back when desired, and the bolt of an ordinary padlock may be passed through the opening J of the standard E, and thus the block may be held down and the door locked without sealing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is p 1. In combination with afla-nge-headed hasp, an independent locking device consisting of the box D, carrying the hinged block G, which is provided with the sliding bolt F, adapted to enter one end of the box D, all being arranged to embrace the hasp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the hasp having a flanged head with the independentbox D, carrying the hinged block G and sliding bolt F, and being provided at one end with the ears d d, and at the other with the ears 6 e, constructed to catch and hold the flanged head of the hasp, substantially as described. a
