Filed Aug. 29, 1958, Ser. No. 758,031
3 Claims. (Cl. 81-15) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sizing and truing tools for use particularly although not necessarily, in engine mufiler, exhaust and tail pipe openings in motor vehicle service stations and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to be used in openings of all sizes within a given range.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an adjustable pipe sizing and truing tool of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer [to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a View in side elevation of an adjustable pipe sizing and truing tool constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing a portion of the device broken away in section;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the tool;
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a reduced view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4, showing the device engaged in a pipe.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated handle 6 of suitable metal. The handle 6, which may also be of any desired dimensions, is provided in its upper end portion with an opening 7 to facilitate hanging the tool on a rack or other support. Mounted on the lower end portion of the handle 6 is a head which is designated generally by reference character 8.
The head 8 includes an elongated metallic plate 9 which, in the embodiment shown, is rigidly secured longitudinally on the lower end portion of the handle 6 in a manner to depend therefrom through the medium of rivets 10. Formed longitudinally in an intermediate portion of the plate 9 is a slot 11. The plate 9 is further provided, in its lower end portion, with a pair of threaded openings 12.
The head 8 further includes a pair of stationary horizontal shafts or spindles 13 on the lower end portion of the plate 9. The spindles 13 comprise reduced, threaded shanks 14 which are screwed into the openings 12 and which provide shoulders 15 which abut the plate 9. Kerfed heads 17 are provided on the outer ends of the spindles 13. Rollers 18 are journalled on the spindles 13.
Mounted on the plate 9 above the spindles 13 and ad Threadedly mounted longitudinally in the lower end portion of the plate 9 is an adjusting screw 25. The screw 25 projects into the slot 11 and is engaged with the reduced end portion 20 of the spindle 19 for adjusting the upper roller 24 toward or away from the stationary lower rollers 18. In Figure 4 of the drawing, the shoulder of the spindle 19 which abuts the plate 9 is indicated at 26.
It is thought that the use of the tool will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the rollers 18 and 24 are engaged longitudinally in the end portion of the pipe to be sized and trued, as indicated at 27 in Figure 5 of the drawing. The tool is then turned while the screw 25 is adjusted to engage the rollers 18 and 24 with the inner diameter of the pipe 27 thus removing dents and other irregularities and restoring said pipe to a true cylindrical shape in an obvious manner.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A pipe sizing and truing tool comprising: a plate, spindles secured at one end on said plate at right angles thereto, the other ends of said spindles being free, rollers journalled on said spindles and operable circumferentially on the inner diameter of the work, an operating handle on the plate, means for engaging the rollers with the work, said plate having a slot therein, one of said spindles being slida-bly adjustable in the slot, said means including a screw threadedly mounted in the plate and operatively engaged with said one spindle in said slot for adjusting said one spindle in one direction, and means for frictionally securing said one spindle against movement in both directions in the slot.
2. A pipe sizing and truing tool comprising: a plate having a slot therein, a pair of stationary spindles secured at one end on the plate at right angles thereto, a movable spindle on the plate paralleling the stationary spindles and having one end adjustably secured in the slot, the other ends of all of the spindles being free rollers journalled on the spindles and operable circumferentially on the inner diameter of the work, an adjusting screw threadedly mounted in the plate and projecting longitudinally into the slot and engageable with the movable spindle for adjusting same in one direction in the slot for engaging the rollers with the work, means for frictionally securing the movable spindle against movement in both directions in the slot, and an operating handle on the plate.
3. A pipe sizing and truing tool comprising: an elongated handle, an elongated plate secured longitudinally on one end portion of the handle and projecting therefrom, said plate having a longitudinal slot in an intermediate portion thereof, a pair of transversely spaced, parallel stationary spindles having one end secured on the outer end portion of the plate at light angles thereto,
Patented Oct. 18, 1960' a: movable spindle on said intermediate portion of said plate paralleling the stationary spindles and having one end adjustably secured in the slot, the other ends of all of the spindles being free rollers journalled on the spindies and operable circumferentially on the inner diameter of the work, an adjusting screw threadedly mounted: in 1 said' outer end portion of the plate and projecting longitudinally into the slot and engaged with the movable spindle for adjusting samein one direction in said slot for operatively engaging the rollers with the work and a retaining nut threaded on the movable spindle and; engageable with the plate for frictionally securing said movable spindle against movement in both directions in the slot.
