RIDING-SADDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,623, dated March 25, 1884.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM .FRAZIER, of West Alexander, in the county of VVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a saddle constructed of india-rubber or its compounds, whereby I am enabled to produce a saddle which shall be cheap, elastic, and much more durable than one-made of leather, the same having no tree to break, sewing to rip, or tacks or nails or other fastenings to rust and loosen, and, unlike a leather saddle, is not liable to be injured by exposure to rain. The body of the saddle or saddle proper is formed in one piece in a mold, and the whole is or may be constructed to prevent contact with the spine and withers of the horse, and to provide for circulation of air over the back of the horse, together with a steady bearing for the saddle thereon, substantially as hereinafter described.

Although the invention will here be shown as applied to a gentlemans saddle, it is equally applicable to a ladys or side saddle.

Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a side view of the body portion of a gentlemans saddle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section thereof.

A is the saddle proper or seat and body portion of the saddle, made of .india-rubber or its compounds. The portion A is formed In a recess in the side of the saddle is a pin, f, around which the stirrup-strap e is to be passed, the said pin being entered from the front of the saddle. The arrangement is the same on both sides of the saddle when the saddle is a gentlemans one, and the same pins f also serve as fastenings for the girth g of the saddle, made in two sections.

The saddle proper or portion A is constructed so that it will only come in contact- Said portion or saddle proper, A, may be lined with felt i or other snitablematerial, the same being cemented or otherwise secured to the rubber.

The seat of the saddle may either be perforated or not, as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1's- 1. The combination, with the body and seat portion A, of a saddle formed of rubber and having recesses in its sides, of the pins f, inserted in said recesses, substantially. as herein shown and described.
