fram/5yd United States Patent() 2,948,402 REcoRD FILE v Jared W. Patterson, 1689 Kaweah Drive, vIrasadena, Calif.
Filed Aug. 25, '1958, Ser. No. 756,835 'I6 claims (cl. r11-4o) This invention has to do generally with record or tiling holders of the type comprising a frame structure accommodating a series of tiling compartments or pockets so arranged and contained within the frame structure as to afford open and convenient access to the material filed in the individual pockets. The invention has been developed particularly as a iile and holder for enveloped phonograph records, and will be described with reference to a preferred embodiment of the invention so designed.
My general object is to provide an improved tile for openly and conveniently accessible records, characterized by `the practical advantages of extreme simplicity and low cost of manufacture, the capacity of the structure in relation to its over-all size to accommodate a large number of records, and the suitability of the invention for use as a record le for private use in the home, or for public display and selling purposes as in stores.
Structurally, the invention contemplates mounting and accommodating .the record-receiving compartments or pockets within a simplified and highly practical form of frame structure, which may and mos-t desirably is made of a single or continuous length of tubing shaped to provide above a base portion, a pair of horizontal and parallel supporting extents slotted to receive a series of hangers for the individual record-receiving pockets, all in a manner that the hangers are freely slidable to facilitate access to and identification of particular records to be selected.
In its more specific aspects, the invention contemplates forming the frame by bending a tube so that its free ends form the slotted pocket-supporting extents, the tube being bent downwardly at the rear of the frame to extend forwardly to form base extents paralleling the slotted lengths and which are interconnected by horizontal bends with a transverse intermediate configuration. At the rear, the frame may be further rigidized by a transverse brace which may also be of tubular stock.
The various features and objects of the invention, as well as the details of a typical and preferred embodiment, will be understood more fully from the following detailed description of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective showing of the Iile assembly;
Fig. 2 is a reduced scale plan view of Fig. 1 with the records removed;
Fig. 3 is a transverse cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3 illustrating the pocket formation in association with the hanger bars.
The le assembly comprises a frame structure generally indicated at which preferably is made of light weight tube stock bent as shown to form a pair of upper horizontal and parallel free end extents 11 which mount the hanger bar and le pocket assembly generally indicated at 12. The straight supporting extents 11 continue rearwardly to a vertical bend 13 and thence for- ICC wardly to a base extent 14 which is parallel to the arm 1'1 above, lthe elevation of the latter being suicient to afford ample depth for the later described pockets, above the base extents 14. The latter are interconnected by horizontal bend continuations 15 with a transverse' inter- Y mediate portion 16 to complete the base structure. The
slots 18 for reception of the slidable hanger bars 19, the
terminal end portions of which are notched upwardly at 20 to receive the slot edge 21 and present a terminal ear 22 of suicient vertical width to prevent removal from the slot 18 of the hanger in its normal illustrated position. The hanger 19 however may readily be removed by rotating the bar into the plane of the slot 18 and swinging the bar out ofthe slot.
The record-receiving pockets 23 may be formed of any suitable flexible sheet material such as fabric, reinforced plastic sheet and the like, so associated with the hanger bars 19 as to form a pocket between each successive pairs of bars. Preferably the pockets are formed from a continuous extent or ribbon of the material 24 which as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is doubled over the notched central portion 2S of each hanger and sewn or otherwise adhered along seam lines 26 below the bars. Preferably, the frame 10 and pockets 23 are so proportioned in depth as to receive the record-containing jackets or envelopes 27 to a depth leaving exposed a considerable upper extent of the jackets so that they may be readily identified and the succession of jackets easily manipulated in the various usages of the tile. As the drawing shows, the envelopes 27 have exposure out of their pockets of about one-half the envelope depth, thus giving balance in relation to the bars 19 such that the envelopes tend to rock about the bar contacts with the frame, and thus permit selective visibility of the individual envelopes by reason of their tilting or rocking movement, instead of having to rely solely on bodily shifting of the individual envelopes and their pockets along the frame.
As will be apparent from the foregoing, the adaptability of the frame structure to be formed of tubing, and particularly a single length bent to the illustrated contiguration, together with a particular suitability of the arm extents 11 to serve as slotted supports for the hangers and pocket assembly, render the invention uniquely advantageous from a manufacturing standpoint as Well as practicability and convenience in use.
I claim:
l. A record file comprising a frame including a base and a pair of horizontally extending parallel tubular supports having elongated slots in their opposing sides, a succession of hangers terminally received within said s-lots for sliding movement therein, and means forming recordreceiving pockets between and `connected to said hangers, said frame being formed of a single pipe length extending below parallel to the supports and also transversely of the frame at its base.
2. A record file comprising a frame formed of a tube having a pair of spaced horizontal and substantially parallel portions from the rear of which the tube is bent downwardly and then forwardly to base extents which parallel sai-d support and have bend. continuances with a transverse base portion, said parallel portions having elongated slots in their opposing sides, a succession of hangers terminally received within said slots for sliding movement therein, and means forming depending record receiving pockets between and connected to said hangers.
3. A file according to claim 2, including also a transverse member interconnecting the upper rear and downwardly bent portions of the frame.
4. A iile according -to claim 2, in which the forward slotted ends of said parallel portions extend beyond said. transverse base portion a distance sucient to accommodatea plurality of saidpockets.
5. A le according to claim 4, in which said hangers comprise bars. notched to slide along the tube surfacesforming they lower edges of said slots and prevent Withdrawal of the normally positioned bars from the. slots, the bars being. so Withdrawable when rotated from their normal positions.
6. A. le according to claim 5, in which said pockets are formed? by a continuous length of sheetv material doubled on itself and connected to said bars, said pockets 15 mension of a standard phonograph record envelope so as to permit exposure of approximately the upper half of such envelopes contained in the pockets.
