RAZOR HONE WITH MAGNETIC BODY Filed June 19, 1958 INVENTOR. ANTHONY T. SPANO BY f7 This invention concerns a new and improved razor hone.
According to the invention there is provided a tool es- 'pecially adapted for honing straight razors. The tool has a body made of magnetized material so shaped that a steel razor blade is attracted to the tool with the edge of 20 the blade lying in the magnetic field. The body of the tool polishes the edge while the magnetic field trains or aligns irregularities in the edge.
It-is therefore a principal object to provide a razor honing tool=provided with a body of magnetized material. It is a further object to provide a honing tool with a magnetized body having a longitudinal concave portion providing two fine, tapered edges over which a razor edge is stroked.
A still further object is to provide a magnetized honing tool with at least two longitudinal concave portions providing a plurality of pairs of fine tapered edges.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a honing tool embodying the invention, with a razor blade in operative position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 and showing part of a razor being sharpened on the hone.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of another form of hone body.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 6 of another form of hone body.
In the drawings there is shown a tool 10 having a cylindrical handle 12. The handle may be elliptical in cross section. Secured on the handle is a generally annular guard 14. Beyond the handle the'body 16 of the tool has a tapered form. The elongated body 16 has a longitudinally extending concave recess 18 formed therein to provide two fine, coplanar edges 20, 22. The edges, are non-parallel and approach each other toward the remoter free end 23 of the body. In cross section the tool body 16 is crescent-shaped and thus has a concave inner surface 18 and a convex outer surface 24 as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. p
The body 16 is preferably formed of hardened steel. This may be razor steel or surgical steel. Such steel has States Patent is in the'region of the N' pole and the other edge is in the region of the S pole. The magnetic field will, of course, be concentrated in body 16. When a straight" st'ee'l razor blade 30' having an edge 32 to' be honed is placed obliquely across the hone, edge 32iwill intersect edges 20 and 22 at two points. The edge 32 will provide a path P for the magnetic flux as indicated by a dotted line in'Fig. 2. The blade 30 may be reciprocatedlongitudinally in the direction of arrow 34. As this is done edges 20 and 22 will smooth and polish the edge 32 of the blade. At the same time, microscopic irregularities and projections will be trained down to align with the longitudinally extending edge 32. The magnetized body, of course, attracts the entire'body of blade 30 to the edges 20, 22 so that the blade can be moved longitudinally backward and forward in the direction of its length without exertion of any manual pressure on the blade perpendicular to edge 32.
This last characteristic wherein the edges 20, 22 are magnetically held in contact with the edge 32 is very important because it insures that the contact pressure is the same throughout the entire length of longitudinal travel of the blade 30. The result is a fine, uniform honing of the entire blade edge.
The taper of the body 16 toward its outer edge is important because the edges 20, 22 are there more closely spaced together and there is a weaker magnetic field. Thus, the honing can be started at the inner end of the recess 18 where the magnetic field is strongest. As honing continues the blade will be gradually moved to the points of closer spacing of the edges 20, 22 and weaker magnetic field until the honing tapers off to a finish at the some nickel and chromium content. and 5.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the body 16 again has a tapered form with narrow tapered sides 36 and 38. The body is magnetized so that these sides provide the N and S poles respectively. Two
concave broad sides 18 and 24* provide pairs of cooperating coplanar edges 20, 22 and 20 22 Edges 20, 22 provide magnetic path P for sharpening the blade 30 and edges 20, 22 provide the magnetic path P.
Convex side 24 of body 16 can be ribbed or corrugated as shown by corrugations 27. This corrugated side will provide a coarse honing side to the tool while edges 20, 22 will provide the fine honing.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim. v
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent A razor hone, comprising an elongated body, said body having a concave side defining two long coplanar edges, said body being magnetized with a magnetic field extending transversely across the body so that one of said edges has one magnetic polarity and the other edge has a different magnetic polarity, said body being uniformly tapered in form to provide a'smaller cross-sectional area and weaker magnetic field at one end and a larger crosssectional area and stronger magnetic field near the other end, said edges being most Widely spaced at said other end of the body and most-closely spaced at said one end thereof, said body having a portion terminating in a handle with a generally annular guard disposed near said other end of the body between said handle and said other end, said body having a flat ribbed side extending outside of said edges and said concave side, said' body being generally rectangular in cross section, with said ribbed side being formed with one grade of coarseness of corrugations, said body having another fiat ribbed side formed with another grade of coarseness of corrugations, said body having still another concave side disposed opposite the first-named concave side to provide another two coplanar edges of difierent magnetic polarity respectively, whereby the razor is honed with varying pressure during movement from end to end of said body.
