SOPHIE ROSENTHAL, on BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
UNDER-GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,507, dated March 4, 1884.
Application filed December-26, 1883. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOPHIE ROSENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain, new and. useful Improvements in Oombined Chemise and Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved undergarment for female wear, which comprises a chemise and drawers combined.
The invention consists in a special construction of the combined garment from one integral piece .of fabric, and in certain peculiarities of cut or pattern hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings hereto annexed, in which Figure 1 is a front Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is aview of the pattern, and comprises the single piece from which the combined garment is made.
The letter A designates the upper or body part of the garment, which serves as the chemise; and B, the lower or leg part, which serves as the drawers. The top edge, 0, is to fit about the bust. The vertical edges d meet in front,
and have buttons 6 and holes, by which they are secured together. The backof the chemise is designated by f.
g designates the shoulder-straps, which,in
the pattern, are formed by two pieces at each shou1der.' One is cut to project from the back portion and one from the front portion, and the ends 9 of the two straps are united-by a seam, which comes on top of the shoulder. From the point which comes directly under the arm is a cut-out, h, the two edges h, which curve away or in opposite directions from each other, while a straight horizontal edge, t, extends from one of said curved edges to the other at the bottom of the cut-out. The two curved edges 72/ are sewed together and produce the desired spring of the garment on the sides extending vertically below the arm, and
the material at the horizontal edge 12 is folded to form a double plait, is, thus producing the requisite fullness at and about the hips. The horizontal edge at the top of the plait is properly stitched or stayed, as shown at i, to give the requisite strength. The edges n of each leg part are sewed together, and thus form the leg. The lower edge, 1), of each leg may be trimmed in any suitable manner, as ladies drawers usually are. Aband, q, is sewed onto the front and top edge, 'c,'which is gathered,
thereby making the garment fit about the top What I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is'- A garment for underwear, consisting of a chemise and drawers made of one integral piece of fabric, having in the body part a cut-out directly under the arms, the edges of which form a vertical seam, and the horizontal bottom edge of which is formed into a plait at the lower end of the said seam, whereby the desired fit is produced about the body and the requisite fullness about the hips, as. shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOPHIE ROSENTHAL.
Witnesses; JNo. E. MORRIS,
