Filed Nov. zo, 195s, ser. No. 775,241 2 Claims. Y(C1. 1'5-118) The object of this invention is to devise a novel waxing and polishing head for mops which can be economically manufactured and which will be eicient in operation.
In devices of this character, the handle contains or carries the waxing or cleaning material and is provided with manually controlled feeding mechanism and has a long life, while the waxing and cleaning head wears out and has to be replaced by a new head.
A further object of the invention is to devise a novel head which can be replaceable without the use of tools.
A further object is to devise a novel construction and arrangement of a waxing portion and novel means -to assemble it with the body portion of the head.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter appear in the detailed description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments of it which we have found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited, except by the scope of the appended claims, to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a waxing and polishing head embodying the invention, and shown in assembly with a handle.
Figure 2 is an exploded View of the component parts of the head.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation showing an assembly stage with a stud carried by a waxing assembly extending through an aperture in the body portion.
Figure 4 is a view similar to that of Figure 3 but showing the stud bent over the body portion.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure l.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of another embodiment of body portion formed of plastic material.
Figure 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 shows in elevation another form of stud device which can be employed.
Figures 9 and 10 are sectional details of other forms of fastening devices for securing the plate to the body portion.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings:
Referring rst to Figures l to 5 inclusive, a body portion 1 is in the form of a rectangular Wooden block of material of substantially uniform thickness throughout its area and provided with longitudinally spaced apertures 2. The body portion 1 has at its central portion near one side of the body portion a vertical hole 3 in free communication with the front end of a laterally exnite States Patent tending hole 4which opens through the rear side of the body portion. The hole 3 extends through the top and bottom of the body portion. l
A coil spring 5 inserted into the hole 3 has adjacent strands interlocking with a rounded head 6, commonly called a dolls head, formed at the forward end of a horizontal stretch of a handle 7, the head having a rounded portion with a tapered terminal and a groove in rear of the rounded portion.V
It will be clear that the lateral stretch 7 terminates in a point with a shoulder in rear of saidpoint.
A waxing and polishing assembly consistsV of a rectangularly shaped rigid flat plate 8 to the underside of which the skin side of a wool strip 9 is glued and side marginal portions of the plate and wool secured thereon are folded upwardly and inwardly to form seats for the body portion 1. The plate 8 carries in any desired manner longitudinally spaced upstanding studs 10 which pass through the apertures 2 in the body portion and their free ends are then bent over into contact with the body portion to maintain the assembly of the body portion and the Waxing and polishing assembly. A cover strip 11 is preferably glued to the top face of the body portion, and such cover strip may be in the form of a rectangular block of plastic or other type of absorbent material.
The steps of drilling the apertures 2 and the holes 3 and 4 can be eliminated by employing a plastic body portion as shown in Figures 6 and 7. In this embodiment, a -body portion 12 has a flat top face with depending side anges, and depending from the top are longitudinally spaced stud receiving sockets 13 which open through the top and are adapted to receive the studs 10 in the same manner as already explained. A boss 14 depending from the top has a vertical hole 15 to receive the coil spring 5 and a lateral hole 16 to receive the bottom stretch of the handle in the same manner as set forth in connection with Figures 1 to 5.
It will thus be apparent that the body portion 12 can be substituted for the body portion 1.
In Figure 8, the studs are formed by a U shaped Wire 17 having upstanding end portions to pass through the apertures 2.
The renewable Waxing and polishing assembly for replacement may consist of only the rigid plate, the waxing and polishing material and the studs, or it may include the body portion and also if desired the absorbent block.
However, it is not necessary to replace the body portion, the handle or the manually controlled means for controlling the feed of liquid, since they are fabricated for a long life and are not subjected to wear as is the waxing and polishing material.
The means for securing the plate to the body portion may have any desired construction. For example, in Fig. 9 it is shown in the form of a bolt 18 having a head contacting the bottom of the plate with a threaded shank receiving a nut to contact the top face of the body portion. Y
In Fig. 10, the fastening -device is shown in the form of a screw 19 passing through the body portion and threaded into the plate.
If the handle is given a sharp pull rearwardly, it is released from the spring and can -be withdrawn from the body portion. When the handle is pushed through the lateral hole 4, the dolls head interlocks with adjacent strands of the spring, as will be apparent.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A waxing and polishing head, comprising a rectan- Patented July 5, 1960L gular shaped body portion having a vertical hole and having a lateral hole opening through one side wall of the body portion and into the vertical hole, a coil spring in said vertical hole with adjacent coil portions adapted to interlock with a handle inserted into said holes, a at rigid plate having opposite side portions deflected upwardly and inwardly to form spaced side anges, a wool strip secured to the bottom of said plate and its side anges to form seats for the bottom of the body portion, means to secure said plate to said body portion to clamp the wool strip between the body portions and the wool strip on said flanges, and a block of absorbent material covering the top wall of said body portion and secured thereto.
2. The construction dened in claim l, wherein a handle has a lateral stretch at its inner lower end terminattf, ing in a point with a rounded shoulder in rear of said point and with an annular groove in rear of said shoulder to receive adjacent coil portions to interlock the handle with the head.
