WVILLIAM H. PAINE, OF BARNSTABI E, MASSACHUSETTS.
BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,670, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed August 25, 1883. (No model.)
f aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PAINE, of Barnstable, in the county of Barnstable, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brooms, of which the following is a description sufficiently full,
- clear, and exact to enable any person skilled and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the filling, which is composed of any suitable material,
and doubled and securely sewed through and through in the usual manner by the twines or wires B, as best seen in Fig. 1.
E represents a flaring sheet -metal case, through the top of which the filling is introduced, being secured firmly in position by the rod 0 and nut w, the rod passing through the ends of the case, in which it is supported, and also through the bend or bight in the filling, as shown. Disposed beneath the rod 0 there are a series of bolts, I), provided with nuts m, the bolts passing transversely through the case E and filling A, and serving to hold the parts firmly together and support the rod and prevent it from being bent or displaced. A wooden block, F, is placed ,in the case E, being concaved or grooved longitudinally on its lower edge, to fit nicely over the top of the filling,
and secured by the bolt K, nut d, and screws G. A handle, H, is fitted into a hole in the top of the block F, and detachably secured therein by means of the bolt K, which passes through the same.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that when'the filling becomes worn and unfit for use it may be readily removed fromthe broomhead and replaced by new filling; also, that a handle maybe easily substituted for the old, in case of accidental breakage.
Having thus explained 'my invention, what I claim is- The improved broom herein described, the same consisting of the filling A, rod 0, bolts D, case E, block F, screws G, handle H, bolt K, and nuts d m so, all constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
