Description

May 10, 1960 o. P. HARRIS BATHROOM RACK Filed Nov. 21, 1957 4 W R m A G H 3 I P v F. D
W fiw liiii k 6 c H L vvVV/w/ United StatesPatent G This invention relates to bath room accessories for holding appropriate articles of various kinds, and especially the devices employedv to supplement the built ice With continued reference to the drawing, the invention comprises a relatively broad sleeve type mounting portion adapted to be applied to and substantially encircle a shower curtain rod 11 on which, by means of supporting hook 12, a shower curtain is slidably supported so that it may be disposed in extended position, as illustrated in Fig. 1,'during the taking of a shower to confine water discharged through a shower head 14 within the shower area of the bath room.
From the relatively broad mounting portion 10 there depends a shaft 15, the lower end of which forms an enlarged C-shaped hook 16 upon which a towel, robe or other article may be supported. This hook16 is disposed in the same general position as the mounting portion 10 so that in use it will be at right angles to i the shower curtain rod, and the hook is so designed that in fixtures of a bath room to thereby render the use of the bath room more comfortable and satisfactory.
The invention also contemplates a device for holding personal articles such as bath cloths, towels, robes or other articles of clothing or the like as well as a device which can be easily applied and removed with articles thereon.
Hangers of various types have been used in the bath room for holding articles of different kinds including soap, bath cloths, towels, robes and other articles of clothing. However these have not been adequate, easily accessible, or have failed to meet the needs of a person using a shower and having to slide a shower curtain into place when using the shower.
It is an object of the invention to provide a relatively simple, practical and inexpensive accessory in the form of a hanger which can be easily applied over a curtain rod and used for supporting articles of various kinds and which may be easily removed and transported with or without articles thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger adapted to be disposed beneath a shower or other curtain rod without being in the way of anyone using the bath room or the shower, and with a relatively wide mounting on a curtain rod encircling upper end portion and with a depending portion having oppositely disposed arms inclined slightly downwardly and generally parallel to such curtain rod encircling portion and an article supporting hook at the lower end of such shaft and transversely of said article supporting arms.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective illustrating one application of the invention and the manner of its use;
Fig. 2, an enlarged perspective of the hanger;
Fig. 3, a side elevation;
Fig. 4, a perspective of a modified type of hanger;
Fig. 5, a perspective of a further modified type of hanger; and
Fig. 6, an enlarged fragmentary detail of the lower end portion of the hanger of Fig. 5.
Briefly stated, the invention more or less is a personal accessory for use when taking a shower for holding bath cloths, towels, robes or other articles, and comprises a relatively wide shower curtain rod encircling portion forming a relatively stable support for a depending shaft having oppositely directed outwardly disposed arms substantially parallel to such rod encircling portion, such arms being inclined slightly downwardly to cause water from an article such as a wet bath cloth or the like to flow by gravity from such depending shaft on the lower end of which is a C-shaped hook disposed substantially at right angles to said arms and the shower curtain rod from which the device is suspended.
it will extend only a slight amount at each side of a vertical plane through the curtain rod, so that it will be in the way of a person using the bath room to the least possible extent.
Intermediate the mounting portion 10 and the article supporting hook 16 are disposed a pair of oppositely extending arms 17 and 18 having their outer ends located at a slightly lower elevation than the inner ends so that when these arms are employed for supporting an article that is wet, such as bath cloths and the like, the water will tend to travel by gravity away from the shaft at opposite sides of the lower supporting hook 16 and thus avoid wetting any article supported on the latter. The arms 17 and 18 may be omitted resulting in the modified device of Fig. 4.
The accessory may include a detachable soap dish 19 having a socket 20 on which the end 21 of a slightly modified type of article supporting hook 16 may be received, the portion 21 of the hook being substantially vertical and in substantial alignment with the shaft 15' of the device. The flattened hook permits the soap dish to be suspended within the shower curtain only a short distance while if the hook were the same as in figures other than 5 or 6 the soap dish would be disposed too far within the shower curtain and would be in the way of the bather.
This shaft 15 is provided with slightly downwardly inclined arms 17' and 18 for the purpose indicated with regard to the arms 17 and 18. The shaft 15' has a mounting portion or suspension hook 10 for location about a shower curtain rod. The soap dish 19 is inclined and has drainage openings 22 in the bottom thereof.
The mounting portions 10 and 10' which encircle the shower rod are sleevelike so that solid contact of substantial length is provided by which the hanger will be held in a stabilized position during use.
A bath room fixture of this type is inexpensive, can be readily produced, and will be found handy when used with any shower curtain rod. When a person is taking a shower he may hang a towel on the hook and find it dry and readily accessible when needed after the shower is completed.
What is claimed is:
A bath room accessory comprising a hanger of a construction to be applied to a shower curtain rod, said hanger having a shaft, a mounting sleeve attached to one end of said shaft for supporting the latter in a depending position from a curtain rod, said mounting sleeve being of an internal diameter slightly larger than that of the shower curtain rod for complementary reception thereof in a manner that said sleeve normally will retain a definite position on said rod, said sleeve having an opening along one side for application over such rod, a relatively large article supporting hook connected to the end of said shaft remote from and substantially at right angles to the axis of said sleeve, one or more' References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 708,877 Eustis Sept. 9, 1902 4 Lennox Ian. 20, 1923 Jones Mar. 21, 1933 Baril June 19, 1951 Smith Apr. 15, 1952 Leach Sept. 2, 1952 FOREIGN PATENTS Norway, June 26, 1932 France Apr. 7, 1954
