1 Claim. (Cl. 50-22) This invention relates to the furnishing ofhabitable quarters, to the equipment employed, and particularly to fixtures such as ceramic bath accessories employed in bath or other rooms where running water is available and with which such fixtures or accessories are utilized.

The invention relates specifically to ceramic bath accessories or fixtures used in bathrooms to perform various supporting or holding functions such as supporting a drinking glass, toothbrush, soap, bath cloth, towels, and other objects of great advantage and convenience to the user.

Unsightliness in bathrooms has been occasioned at least in part by the equipment utilized in various capacities including for holding soap, bath cloths, towels, toothbrushes, tissues, a hand grip for support of the human body and the like. Many of these devices have been objectionable not only because of their appearance but due to their lack in sanitary qualities. Also, because they have been poorly mounted and have had exposed portions likely to cause damage to material or injury to the person.

Heretofore, ceramic bath accessories have been recessed into the Walls of bathrooms and held in place by Portland cement. This has required that the fixtures be manufactured and installed in accordance with specific techniques and such fixtures have been massive in appearance, heavy in weight, and difficult to install. Also, the installation of these fixtures has required highly skilled craftsmanship acquired only by means of an extended apprenticeship. Modern architecture and individuality have made prior structures and techniques unsatisfactory and inadequate.

It is an object of the invention to improve prior methods and equipment and to provide ceramic bathroom accessories of improved appearance, light weight, and ease of installation and which will provide for the convenience of the user and add to the attractiveness of the surroundings.

Another object of the invention is to provide bathroom accessories capable of being installed by unskilled persons but each of which accessories will have a professional looking appearance and can be installed in a fraction of the time and at a small cost.

Another object of the invention is to provide do-ityourself bathroom accessories and fixtures which can be easily applied by the use of a mastic with or without the removing of a tile from the wall and which will be held firmly in position by such mastic.

Another and important object of the invention is to provide bathroom accessories of round design and having sensational advantages of installation, function and sales.

Another object of the invention is to provide a fixture capable of being installed in a wall and which will provide an attractive support for an object, such fixture having a projecting mounting portion adapted to fit into a socket or recess in the wall and by which the device may be readily secured in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wall A"ice fixture in the form of a hollow shell with a mounting projection having a series of cement receiving openings so that when the fixture is supplied with a plastic material or mastic such material will securely fasten the fixture in place by extending both into the wall and into the fixture.

Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will be vapparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Briefly stated, the present invention is directed to accessories which may be surface mounted on a bathroom or other wall for supporting objects, such fixtures being of unique novel design and composed of ceramic material of a character to render obsolete fixtures heretofore in use, the fixtures of the present invention being in the form of ceramic shells or hollow bodies including a mounting or attaching projection on its rear face having widely spaced openings for the reception of a mounting mastic, adhesive, or cementitious substance, and adapted to intimately engage and fasten the fixture to a wall surface with or without the removal of a tile, and a recess to receive the mounting portion.

With continued reference to the drawing, the present invention is a lightweight fixture adapted to be surface mounted on a wall instead of being recessed into a wall of a bathroom or elsewhere. This fixture may be of any desired configuration such as a round body 10 in the form of a shell having hollow side and rear walls-11 and 12, respectively, and a substantially horizontal wall or shelf 13.

The body is provided with a recess 14 for the reception of a drinking glass or other object of generally similar size, and four openings 15 for the reception of toothbrushes or the like.

The fixture may be of a plastic or ceramic material hardened and provided with any desired type of surface or finish. Also, it may be of any desired novel configuration such as round and of a nature appropriate for holding desired articles. The fixture is intended to replace earlier massive and heavy structures and to encourage installation by the usual householder in a short time and with minimum expense.

The rear of the round ceramic fixture is provided with an outwardly projecting mounting portion 16 with spaced openings 17, such projecting portion preferably is of square or rectangular outline and of a size somewhat like a Wall tile which it may replace. The similarity of shape facilitates the mounting of the fixture on a wall by means of a fast setting cement or mastic 18 to fasten the fixture in place, such cement or mastic extending over the mounting projection and through the openings into the hollow interior of the fixture and over the surface of the wall to which the device is applied for holding the fixture in place.

In Fig. 3, the fixture is illustrated as applied to a fiat wall having a smooth surface, the mastic 18 is employed to mount the fixture on a flat wall 19, the mastic filling the space around the mounting portion 16 and between the rear wall of the fixture and the wall on which the fixture is mounted, some of the mastic exuding or flowing through the openings 17 to provide a locking effect.

in Fig. 4, a similar fixture is mounted on an upright wall 19 in which one of the tiles 20 has been removed to receive the projection 16 of the rear surface of the fixture and with the mastic 21 intimately adhering to the wall and projecting or exuding through the openings 17 into the fixture.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that a simple ceramic tile is provided in the form of a hollow shell which may provide a frame and a desired supporting surface, and which xture or accessory is of attractive appearance and easy to install being surface mounted and therefore requiring only the use of an adhesive spread or mastic to secure the same in place. As a result installation may be made by unskilled labor or anyone desiring so to do, and due to its physical structure the permanency of its mounting is enhanced and its desirability increased.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is illustrated inthe drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the accompanying claims.

What is claimed is:

A wall fixture for surface mounting upon a tiled wall comprising a hollow double-walled one-piece ceramic shell with a substantially flat rear surface having a relatively thin rearwardly extending mounting projection of generally rectangular shape but smaller in size than the rear surface of the fixture and corresponding in outline to that of a wall tile for which it is adapted to be substituted, said mounting projection having Widely spaced openings with a relatively smooth portion therebetween, said openings providing communication with the interior of the shell whereby said fixture may be quickly, easily and inexpensively installed and securely held in place by mastic on the wall and extruded through the openings in the mounting projection to the hollow interior of the xture with the hollow shell serving to receive and contain excess mastic.
