Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. THAYER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,539, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed November 21, 1883. (No model.)
which it appertains to make and use the same,
referencebein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, whichform. a part of this specification.
My invention described herewith relates to garment-buttons; and it consists, essentially, of
a metallic front or disk provided with a central projecting shank or neck, the face of thelatter being flat and having a central opening, together with two or more smaller openings arranged therein.
Myinvention further consists in combining with the metallic disk a metallic blank ap- .proximating a concave-convex form, and
adapted to deflect or clinch the prongs of a staple when used therewith, to form a fastening. Said clinching-blank is adapted and intended to be rigidly secured within the button-shank duringthe process of manufacture and previous to the operation of fastening to the fabric, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents, enlarged, a vertical central sec-. tion through my improved button as attached to fabrics. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section through a button embodying my invention, showing the clinching-disk rigidly secured within the button-shank, complete and ready for use or attachment. Fig. 3 represents a section through the metallic front and shank of the button. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 represents an inverted plan view of the prong-deflecting disk. Figs. 6 and 7 represent staples adapted to be used in combination with the button.
A in the drawings represents the button, provided within a shank, a, the face a of the latter (which is adapted to rest against the fabric) having therein a central hole, a, and two or more smaller openings, a arranged aroundthe same, as fully shown in Fig. 4. B represents a metallic disk rigidly secured within said shank a, by solder, swaging, or other suitable means, previously to attaching the button to the fabric, as shown complete in Fig. 2. For the, purpose of deflecting or clinching the prongs of a staple when used therewith, I form a series of dies, b, upon or in the disk B. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 5.) I however do not claim this device in this application, except in combination, as the same is embodied in another pending application of mine in the United States Patent Office.
In attaching my improved button to garments, 820., I place the button, having the clinching-disk B rigidly secured within the shank a, upon the fabric or in a suitable setting-instrument, and at the same time placing a staple in position, when, pressure being applied thereto, the prongs of the staple are forced through the fabric and also through the openings a of the button-shank a. The said prongs, now coming. in contact with the dies 1) of the disk B, are thereby bent and deflected through the central opening, (L to separate the fabric F, as fully shown in Fig. 1..
Having thus described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is 1. The garment-button herein. described, consisting of the front A, having a depending shank. or neck, a, the flat face a of the latter being provided with openings c and central opening, a and further consisting of the clinching-disk B, rigidly secured within the shank a, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The button herein described, composed of the metallic front A, having an apertured shank, a, and clinchin gdisk B, rigidly secured within said shank, as described, in combination with a staple adapted to be inserted through the fabric from the under side thereof and clinch against said disk B, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig-.
of two Witnesses.
