Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
EEANHLINA. sMI'rH, JE., or rEovIDENcE, EHoDE IsLAND.
B-U-TTO N SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.4293,531, dated February 12, 1884.
Appueation inea November 21, less. (N model.)
'b @ZZ whom z't may concern.-
Be itknown that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, .I r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
AMy invention relates to garment-buttons; and it consists, essentially, of a button com posed of a metallic front, having aprojecting aperturcd neck or shank and a staple provided with an enlarged head adapted to be rigidly secured within said neck during the process of manufacture, thereby forming, when thus completed, a pronged button having a slightly-raised bead around the lower edge of said neck, the prongs of the button at the same time depending through the shank thereof and at a distance from said bead, thus forming abroad attaching-surface,the whole adapted to be secured to garments or other articles of wearing-apparel by any well-known device or means.
In the annexed 4sheet of drawings, (made greatly enlarged) Figure l represents a vertical central section through my improved button complete. Fig. 2 represents a `plan view of a front disk having a perforated oval shank. Fig. 3 represents `a central section through the same on line x' :vl Fig. 4. represents a blank adapted to be bent to form the staple shown in Fig. 4i, and again shown rigidly secured within the shank of the button in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a method of securingthe staple within the shank by means of movable dies.
In carrying out my invention, A in the drawings represents a button complete constructed according to my improvement, and consisting of the frnt or disk, a, having a shank or neck, a,'the lower or attaching side thereof being provided with openings afor receiving the prongs b of the staple b. The head of the latter is rigidly secured within vthe shank c during the process of manufacturing the button. For the purpose of illustrating a method of effecting this, I have represented in Fig. 5 a series of dies, H E and F F, the latter dies being in halves andadaptedto embrace the shank a of the button'.
Now, upon pressure being imparted to these dies they are forced toward each other, thereby slightly compressing the shank, the lower side thereof at the same time being slightly expanded, and forming thereby the bead or projection a2 around the lower edge of said shank, as fully shown, the head of the staple being thereby firmly retained therein. In the drawings I have represented both oval and round shanks in their cross-section. The staples, as represented, have a head projecting beyond the prongs b', as shown at b", thereby forming, when secured within the button-- shank, a corresponding enlarged retainingsurface against the fabric, &c., when secured thereto.
.I am aware that itis not new to' provide buttons with two or more attaching-prongs, and I therefore do not claim such, broadly; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The garment-button Aherein described,
consisting of the front a and staple b, the former being provided with the neck or shank a', the face thereof having openings a3 therein, said neck also adapted to receive the convexheaded staple b, the latter being rigidly secured therein by suitable means during the process of manufacture,'and forming abead, a2, around the lower edge of the shank and the bearing-surfaces f outside the prongs b', substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
