Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH MCGRA'TH, OE NEWTON, KANSAS.
SOFA-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,488, dated February 12, 1884.
Too/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known thatI, JOSEPH MCGRATH, of
Newton, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved SofaLBedstead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. vThe ,object of my invention is to provide a new and improved hinge for Vhinging the removable seat or `top of a Sofa-bed, lounge, eX- tensible chair, or'ot-her like piece of furniture to the seat-frame. j
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciicatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure lis a cross-Sectional elevation on the line Fig; 2, of a sofa-bed provided with my improved hinge, showing lthe seat on the seat-frame. Fig. 2 is a'front View, showing it in a like position. Fig. 3 isa cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line y y, Fig. 2, showing the top s wung down. Fig. 4 is a plan view ofthe joint.
A metal band, A, is secured to the back BV and to the top of the seatframe C of asofa,
, lounge, or chair, and terminates in an eye, D,
at the front edge ofthe seat-frame. A bracket, E, or stud, or other equivalent, projectsfrom the band A or from` the front face of the back. The band A can be secured on the front or rear side of the back B.
To the front eye, D, of the band A an angularly-bent metal bar, F, is hinged, which is at `the Side of the bandA. The said bar F is provided at its inner end with a projecting arm, G, to the free end of which a spiral or like acting spring, H, is fastened, the other end of which is fastened to one of the legs of the sofa, lounge, Snc.
To the end of the frontshank of the angular bar F a band` or bar, J, is hinged, which is fastened to the under Side of the removable seat or removable top K ,the joint of lthe bar F and band J being at about the middle of thewidth of the seat, and the band J being at the same side of the bar F as the band A, as
isv Shown in Fig. 2. A Spring, L, is fastened to the bottom of the seat-frame C in such a manner that it can act on the free end of the Application tiled August 18, 1883. (Model.)
arm G. The seat K is provided with downwardly-proj ecting legs M at the front edge, and a front board, N, fitting between the legs M,
is Secured to the inner Shanks of the angular bars F.
Vhen the bed is folded, the free end of the that the front plate, N, will be between the legs M, which may rest on the top of the front part of the seat-frame, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
If the sofa is to be used as a bed, &c.,-the seat is pulled toward the front and downward until its legs M rest ou t-he iioor, the angular bars F and the plate N swinging downward,
as shown `in Fig.- 3. The Springs H and L counterbalance the Swinging part and greatly facilitate the raising of the seat upon the seati'rame, as both springs press or draw the free end of the arms G downward, thereby tending to throw the angular bars F andthe seat-frame upward.
It will be observedthat when theseat is on the seat-frame theouter Shanks of the angular bars F rest against the under Si de ofthe seat K. 'My improved hinge can be used on any sofa, lounge, easy-chair, andlike piece oli furniture. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and d esire to secure `by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a metallic band, A, a sofa-seat frame, C, and a back having the projections E, of the metallic angular bar F, hinged to an eye, D, of Said band, the bar J, hinged to bar F, vand the removable seat K,
the latter being provided with downwardlyprojecting legs M, and a front board, N,`se cured betweensaidlegs to the inner Shank of bar F, as shown and described.
2. lIhe combination, with a seat-frame, C, having a back, B, of the bands A, the brackets E, the singularly-bent bars F, the removable seat K, and the bands J, secured to the V under Side of the Same, the angular bars F being hinged to the bands A and J, substantially asherein shown and described. i
