Description
April 1960 J. E. WAGGONER HAIR TRIMMER ATTACHMENT Filed July 1, 1957 United statfi Pawn? 2,932,891 HAIR TRIMMER ATTACHMENT Jacob E. Waggoner, Charles City, Iowa Application July 1, 1957, Serial No. 668,975
3 Claims. (Cl. 30-90) The invention relates to the art of trimming hair and has reference in particular to an attachment for electric razors for rendering the razors usable by the individual for trimming his hair around the temples and on the back of the neck.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment for a dry shaver on the order of a clipper attachment for cutting hair and which can be readily affixed to the shaving head of the razor and just as easily removed, the said attachment when affixed to the shaving head being releasably held in proper aligned position by pivoted end portions comprising conventional elements of the razor.
.Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for an electric razor whereby to render the razor useful in cutting hair and which will have longitudinal sections of different thickness so that the effective cutting action on the long hairs can be varied. Thus the operator can use the razor attachment in a manner totaper the cut at the temples and also down the back of the neck if desired.
' A further object is to provide an attachment for electric razors which'will be releasably held to the shaving head by the pivoted end portions of the razor and which will therefore correctly align the teeth of the attachment with those of the shaving head at all times and without requiring adjustment on the part of the operator.
:.Another object is to provide a clipper attachment for electric razors which will be held to the shaving head of the razor in a manner to relieve the head of any side pressure such as would tend to distort the head especially during operation of the device.
A still further object is to provide a hair trimmer attachment for electric razors which will be relatively simple in construction, economical to manufacture, but which will be highly efiective and satisfactory in use.
. With these and other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claimsappended hereto.
In the drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of the device, and wherein like reference characters are used to designate .like parts- Figure l is an end elevational view showing the sha'ving head of an electric razor having the hair trimming attachmentof the invention in operative associated relation therewith;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the attachment and; which shows one longitudinal section as having greater thickness than the other;
Frigure 3' is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the manner of releasably securing the attachment to. the shaving head of an electric razor;
a Figure 4 is a bottom plan viewof the attachment; Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately along line 5-5 of Figure 4; and i 1 Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the attachment.
The trimming attachment, as best shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6 essentially consists of a member 10 formed of any suitable material and having spaced longitudinally extending ribs 11, 12 and 13, the ribs 11 and 13 extending along the side edges of the attachment and the rib 12 having location centrally of the attachment. The
. teeth 14 are connected by the longitudinal extending ribs 11, 1'2 and 13 and the said teeth are shaped on the underside of the attachment for a close fitting engagement of the shaving head of the electric razor to which the same is adapted to be applied. The exterior shape of the teeth 14 is similar in contour to that of their undersurfaces and it will be observed that one longitudinal section of the attachment has teeth which are greater in thickness than the teeth of the other longitudinal section, all of which will be described in detail as the description proceeds.
The electric razor which has been selected for receiving the present attachment is sold under the trademark Schick and is manufactured by Schick, Incorporated of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The body portion 15 of the razor contains the electric power means and mechanism for reciprocating the cutting members 16 and which provide the cutting elements 17, the said cutting elements cutting the hair and the stubble inserted between the slots of the stationary member, which constitutes the shaving head of the razor. Accordingly the shaving head includes spaced portions 18 and 20 of arcuate form and wherein each has associated therewith a cutting member 16 as described. For containing the cutting member the side walls of each portion are indented as at 21 and 22 and as a result of this construction the longitudinal portions of the shaving head have overhanging edges 23 and 24 and which extend longitudinally of the head on respective sides of the same.
- The attachment 10 is adapted to be releasably fixed to the shaving head to add to the usefulness of the shaver by adapting the same for trimming hair around the temples of the head and on the back of the neck. Accordingly the attachment is internally shaped to fit the shaving head of the razor and thus includes substantially identical sections 25 and 26, each extending longitudinally of the attachment on respective sides of the center rib 12. The undersurface 27 of section 25 is arcuate, as best shown in Figures 2 and 5, whereas, the undersurface of section 26 has a similar arcuate formation identitied by 28. When the attachment is operatively assoof section 26 have a thickness which on the average exceeds the thickness of teeth 14 for the section 25. Also, it will be observed that the teeth of the attachment gradually taper in thickness from the longitudinal rib 13 to the longitudinal rib 11. Thus the nose portion 30 of the attachment adjacent rib 13 has the greatest thickness whereas the nose portion 31 adjacent rib 11 has the minimum thickness or approximately a thickness which if not the minimum will be approximately the same as the remainder of the section 25 of the attachment.
- At each end of the shaving head the body portion of the razor is provided with end members 32 and 33, each end member having pivotal connection with the body portion and being held to the body portion by the resilient member 34 in the form of a spring segment having 4 ure 3, in. which position saidmembers are located adcontact at end 35 with the body portion and at end 36 with wall 37 formed integral with its respective end mem-'' her. In operation of the electric razor the end members 32 and 33 are located in closed position, as shown in Figiacent. the respective. ends of the. shaving. head. For cleaning the razor following, a shaving operation the pivoted end members are rotated into an open position, all ofwhich is permitted by: their constructional arrange ment with: respect to the: body portion of. the razor and bythe association which the spring; segments 34- have. therewith. In accordance with the invention the hair trimming, attachment is releasably held to the. shaving" head by the end portions 32 and 33 and for this. purpose: the longitudinal rib 12 is. provided with depending leg. elements 38 and 40. The leg elementsmay be. formed integral with the central longitudinal rib 12 or said. ele ments may be secured thereto as by welding or in? any other preferred manner. Each leg element. also.- has a: special shape inside elevation adapting the same for holding. action by its respective end member. Actually the side elevational shape of each: leg element may; take: many forms, the only one feature. thereof which: is critical comprising the inclined edge 41. which is located. tothe outside of each leg element and the same has an inclinaetion. complementary to the inside surface 42- of its end member.
For locating the attachmentv on the shaving head. of the electric razor the end members 32 and 33 are first rotated into their open position. The attachment is then. placed on the shaving head with the longitudinally extending rib 12, in supported relation on'the post43 of the razor. The length of the post 43 isless than that offthe shavingportions 18 and 20 and thus at each end of the. post a space is provided for the depending leg: elements 38- and 49. With the attachment insupported relation: on'post. 43-the leg elements naturally depend from each. end of the shaving head and project some distancebe yond. the; ends of the shaving portions 18 and 20; Acttually the leg elements 38 and 40 have been. designed: and constructed. so as to have contacting relation: with: the end members 32 and 33 when the, members are: located in their closed position. Thetension-v ofthespring: segments 34 in holding the end members: closedais employed; to hold said members in contact with the inclined edges 41 of the leg elements and accordingly the" ate tachment is releasably-held. to theshaving headnandlsaid' attachment is so positioned on the head: that the: spaces between the teeth 14'thereof areaccurately aligned with. the slots in the shaving head. This materially; facilitatesv thetrimming operation on the long hairs: since they areeonveniently directed by the teeth through: the slots: and are cut by the reciprocating; action of the cutting: ole-.- ments. Also the fact that theteeth taper in-thi'cknessfromone side-edge-of the attachment to the opposite; sideedgerenders it possible to taper the trimming of the. hairat the temples.
During a trimming operation the nose 30 of the at-; tachment is placed againstthe temples above the. ear and then the razor is oscillated orrotated in a. down-v ward direction so as to bring the entire. width of the at= tachment progressivelyv into contact with theztemplesand. at the end of each stroke the edge of minimum thickness adjacent nose 31 will-be in contact with the hair:- ad-- jacent' the ear. Thus the hair is. trimmed in a: tapering: fashion since the. hair entering the. shaving head; at the. thin, edge of the attachment will be cut closer to. the. scalp-of; the individual.
