Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn GEORGE M. DOERSOH, OF ANTIGO, WISCONSIN.
" r BUNG-EXTRACTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,232, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed December 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this'specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of bung-extractors in which a knifeshaped point having a blunt or non-cutting the shank of the bung-extractor, interposed between the back of the knife and the shoulder and at a distance from either, whereby in driving the knife into the bung the extractor will not go in up to the shoulder, as otherwise it frequently does, rendering it inconvenient to apply the claw-iron, but will be stopped by the rigid collar, thereby providing a convenient space for the ready application of the claw-' iron for withdrawing the bung.
In the drawing, which is a perspective view of the improved bung-extractor, A represents the knife, having its lower edge or edges sharp and its back'square and blunt. Bis the shank, affixed to the knife A at its back. 0 is the handle supporting shoulder, beneath and against which the claw-iron is applied to draw out the bung, and D is the collar, rigidly attached to the shank B at such distance from the knife A as to allow the knife to be driven entirely through the bung, and of such size and shape as, when the extractor is being driven into the bung, to strike against the bung and arrest its further progress, said collar being also at such distance from the shoulder 0 as to permit the application of the claw iron to the shank between the shoulder and the collar.
Heretofore bung-extractors of the character of those to which my improvement relates have had no collar, and in use were likely to be driven down to and against the handle-supporting shoulder, thereby rendering'it inconvenient to apply the claw-iron, except by first pulling back the extractor sufficiently for that purpose; but with my collar the extractor cannot be driven in up to the shoulder, but will always be arrested by the collar, leaving the space clear on the shank between the collar and the shoulder, to which the claw-iron can be applied without the delay incident to partially withdrawing the extractor for that pur-' combination with the knife A, the shank B,
and the shoulder O, substantially as and for i the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
' GEO. M. DOERSOH.
