Description

(No Model.) I Q PACKARD.
No. 293,064. Patented Feb. 1884.
a UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
FREDRICK PACKARD, OF BROOKI-ON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,064, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed August 24, 1883. (N0 model.)
My invention relates to an improvement in,
that class of shoes which are provided with. elastic gores at the sides, and has for its object to facilitate the operation of drawing on and pulling off the shoe; and my invention con sists in a shoe having its leg portion provided on both sides with an elastic gore extending around the rear of such leg portion and projecting above the inelastic heel portion thereof, whereby increased elasticity is afforded at the rear of the leg portion, as hereinafter set forth.
In the said drawings,A represents my improved shoe, the leg portion 1) of which is provided on each side with an elastic gore, B. The two gores B B are formed of a single piece of suitable elastic fabric united by a portion, 0, which extends around the rear of the leg of the shoe and projects above the inelastic heel portion d thereof, the rear pulling-loop, c, being preferably attached to the heel portion (2 and entirely disconnected from the elastic portionc;
Instead of forming the elastic portion B B0 of the leg portion of the shoe of a single piece of material, as above described, it may, if preferred, be made of two or more pieces united by a seam or seams.
By providing a shoe with an elastic portion, 0, extending from the side gores around the back of the leg portion, above the inelastic part thereof, as described, the rear portion of the leg is enabled to yield backward to such an extent in drawing on the shoe that the latter operation is rendered much easier than heretofore, whileacomfortable fit at the ankle is also insured; and as in the operation of 50 thereto an imitation of lacing or buttoned front or other fancy work, which should extend to the top of the leg portion, to give the shoe the required finish, which could not be accomplished with the elastic portion placed in front.
I am aware that a shoe has been made hav ing a vertical elastic gore at the heel extending from the top to the, bottom of the leg portion, and sustained by a strap or straps permanently connected therewith, as described in the United States Patent of L. Graf of J anuary 4, 1881, No. 236,323. broad claim to an elastic gore applied to the heel of a shoe or to any of the details of construction shown in the aforesaid patent of Graf.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shoe having its leg portion provided on both sides with an elastic gore extending around the rear of such leg portion and projecting above the inelastic heel portion thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a shoe, the combination, with the leg portion, of the two elastic side gores, B B, united by an elastic portion, 0, extending around the rear of such leg portion and pro jecting above the'inelastic heel portion there} of, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
I therefore lay no;
. fitness my hand this 22d day of August,
A. D. 1883. V
FRED. PACKARD.
