WATCH-MOVEMENT BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,046, dated Februaiy 5, 1884.

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. LOOKE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, and in theStateof Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Holding Watch-Movements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my box and cover separated from each other. Fig. '2 is a like view of said box inclosing a watchmovement, and Fig. 3 is a central cross-section of said box and cover combined and in-- for engagement with either or both plates of a watch-movement, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified- It consists, further, in an open frame provided interiorly with clasps for engagement with the plate or plates of a watch-movement, in combination with covers which are adapted to be passed over and to inclose the sides of said frame, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

In the annexed drawings, A represents a frame which has open sides, and interiorly is slightly larger in diameter than the watchmovement that is to be contained therein, and vertically has a height sufficient to enable said movement to be held within without causing any portion to project above or below its edges. The frame A may be constructed from paper, wood, or metal, as desired, and, should it be deemed necessary, its corners may be filled for the purpose of giving increased strength. Covers B, having the shape shown in Fig. 1. are preferably used to inclosed said box, but may, ifdesired, be omitted.

\Vithin the box A, at the longitudinal center of each side, is a spring,a, which is constructed from a flat strip, in the form shown in Fig. 3, and has one end secured to or within said box-side near one edge, while from such point of attachment said spring or clasp extends inward and toward the opposite edge of said box, and near its end is provided with an outward offset, a. If, now, a watch movement, C, is placed within the box A from the side at or near which the clasps a are attached,

' with its dial side toward the free. ends of said clasps, and then pressed firmly between the latter, the front plate, 0, of said movement will pass into the offsets a and be securely held within the same,and said movement will be suspended midway between the edges of said box.

When thus placed within the box A, the movement 0 may be examined from either side, and said box laid upon a flat surface without i11- jury to said movement, and by placing over the whole the covers B, dust and dirt will be excluded, and the said movement may be safely packed for transportion. In consequence of the square form of said box, it may be more readily and safely packed by itself or with other. boxes than would be possible were any other form employed.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 1. Abox composed of an open frame provided interiorly with spring-clasps for engagement with either or both plates of a watchmovement, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. An open frame provided interiorly with spring-clasps, for engagement with the plate or plates of a watch-movement, in combination with covers which are adapted to be passed over and to inclose the sides of said frame, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
