INDIOATING LOOK.
No. 292,939. Patented Feb. 5. 1884,
UN TED STATES EUGENE o. NIcHoLs,
PATENT OFFICE.
or BANGOR, MAINE.
lNDlGATlNG-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,939, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed July 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itk-nown that I, EUGENE C. NIcHoLs, of Bangor,in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Indicators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- 7 Figure 1 shows a side view of my lock; Fig.
2, portion of door; Fig. 3, top view of lock;-
Fig. 4, side view of key.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of an attachment for a look, more particularly intended for use on hotel and state room doors and in like situations, which will indicateby the simple looking of the door whether the occupant of the room is in or out, the action of the key operating the indicator.
Reference to the drawings willfully explain my invention. In it, however, I have shown my device as secured to the outside of an ordinary lock for the more convenient illustration of the same; but it will be readily understood that the mechanism can, with the exception of the indicators, all be inclosed within the sides of the look, if desired, the lock being constructed with this end in view.
At a is shown a lock of any ordinary construction, having upon each side bolts b a, provided with the usual springs, d, and operated by a supplemental ward, 6, upon the key f. To these bolts are attached projections g h, the projection g, fixed to the bolt on the inner side of the door, and operated by the key, when the door islockedupontheinside, having attached to it a plate or label of any proper material,
inscribed with the word In, and the projection h, operated by the key when the door is locked on the outside, having secured to it in like manner a plate or label bearing the word Out. These plates or labels, when the door is locked, are brought opposite an aperture in the body of the door, as shown at i, which may be glazed and made secure from outside meddling. When the door is unlocked, a plain surface is shown by the indicator.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown and described herein, as the same may be changed to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of my invention. I consider it new, however, to use an indicator operated by the door-key itself.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is V 1. A door-lock the bolt of which is provided with an arm or standard carrying an indicator-plate, in combination with a door provided with an opening which coincides with said plate when the bolt is in its locking position.
2. A door-lock having two locking-bolts, adapted to be operated from opposite sides of the door, each of said bolts being provided with an arm or standard carrying an indicator-plate, said plates arranged in the same line, in combination with a door having an opening which coincides with said plates, whereby either of said plates may be exposed accord, ing as the door is locked from the inside or the outside.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of July, 1883.
EUGENE O. NICHOLS.
