Patented 32111.29, 1884.
. UNITED STATESV PATENT OFFICE.
FERNANDO M. sEN'rRR, OF cOLUMRUs, OHIO.
FILE- BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,692, dated January 29, 1884,
Application filed December 6, 18B3.` (No model.) d
To all whom it may concern:
' hingedtogether at b.
Beit known that I, FERNANDO M. SENTER,
'a citizen ofthe United States, residing "at,
Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Boxes, of' which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
`My invention relates to improvements in le-boxes or receptacles for letters, bills, notes, and business-papers of all kinds.
The object of my invention is to provide a file-box for papers, Ste., which will protect the papers from dust and damp, and which will give more room to examine the papers within the box 5 said papers being usually briefed or indexed at the top, and thus obviate the necessity of taking the papers out of the box or holder for examination, as is usually the case with boxes having all the sides inclosed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l .is a side view of my improved file-box as closed, showing the lid or hinged portion partially and entirely open in dotted lines. Fig.- 2 is an end eIevation, partly in section, showing the` pockets for inclosing the wings or sides of the lower portion of the hinged section.
A is the main portion of the box, which is cut away at the upper portion, as indicated by the 'dotted line B in Fig. l, to admit of the ready handling and examination of the papers. The box A is preferably rectangular in form, and is made with three sides and One end, all in one piece.
To the lower corner of the open side of the box is hinged, at a, a folding section, G,which in turn is made in two sections, D and E, The lower section, D, is provided with wings or sides F, which, when the box is closed, enter the pockets G, formed in the Inain portion of the box A. The said pockets are formed by soldering or otherwise securing to the sides of the box A pieces H, of sheet metal or other material, so as to leave spaces or pockets G between the pieces II and the sides of the box A, to receive the wings F. The wings F are provided with projections d, which impinge against lugs or stops e, and'thus prevent the wings from being entirely withdrawn from the pockets when the section D is-swung back. The section E is also provided with wings or sides I, and also an end section, J, which, when the box is closed, forms a covering for the open end of the box A, the sidesor wings I being adapted to slide over the outside of the box A, and thus form a perfectly-tight box, which will exclude all dust and moisture from the papers, and at the same time be partially fire-proof.
It will be noticed that by having one end and one side to fold back out of theway m-uch more room is given to examine the contents of the box, and all the papers contained therein are exposed to view, and can be more kreadily handled, while the wings on the folding sections serve not only as guards to pre-A vent the papers from being scattered or displaced, but also serve as springs to hold the hinged side to the main body of the box and to exclude the dust, dirt, and moisture from the papers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent,
l. A file-box composed of the main body A, and section C, hinged thereto, which forms the inclosure for one side and one end of the box,
said hinged section being composed of the sec tions E and D, hinged together and adapted to fall back separately r together from the main section A, as set forth. l
2. In a le-box, the hinged and folding section C, composed of the sections E and D, each being provided with wings or side pieces, F I, as set forth.
3. A le-box having ahinged and folding section provided with wings or sides adapted to enter pockets or cavities formed on or in the main section of the box, as set forth.
4. A file-box having a hinged and folding section, E, provided with wings or sides I, and also an end extension, J, which forms the cover for the top of the main section, said sides or wings being adapted to slide over thel sides of the main portion of the box, as set forth.
5. In a file-box, the combination of -section D, having the wings or sides F, provided with the lugs or extensions d, with the pockets or FERNANDO IVI. sENTER.
I/Vitnesses:
'13. P. LINN, HENRY GUI/LELE.
