SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,957, dated January 15, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, OHARLEs M. THEBERA'IH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Chimes for Harness, Saddles, &c. and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to prevent the hammers suspended in sleigh-chimes from damaging the polished surface of the bells in said chimes, and at the same time to cause said hammers to make a positive stroke at every movement of the sleigh or horse connected therewith.

Heretofore, in sleigh or harness chimes, the hammers of the bells theiein have been suspended over said bells, as shown in Figure 1, by arms, to which the hammers have been attached by means of links, or in other cases by means of eyes in both said hammers and arms, so that the movements of the hammers were exceedingly irregular, striking the bells not only at one point directly adjacent,

but at all points within the sweep of said hammers.

The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally en1- bodied in the clauses of the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a front elevation of a set of chimes arranged upon a saddle. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached view of the under side of one of the arms adapted to receive a hammer. Figs. 3 and 4. are sectional views of the same, showing the hammer arranged therein; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation, particularly showing the construction of the extremity of the arm. Fig. 6 illustrates a modified form of the arm.

In carrying out the invention I form a suitable frame-work, a, for the chimes, adapting the same to be secured upon a harness-saddle,

b, or the dash-board of the sleigh, or in any other suitable position. Upon said framework are secured the bells c c 0, over which are arranged the arms d d d, which project over the peripheries of the bells, as shown, so that the suspended hammers drop free of said bells. These features of improvement are, however, common. The extremities of the arms are slotted, as shown at e in Figs. 2 to 5,; the direction of the slots being longitudinal with the arm or radial as respects the bell. Within said slots are suspended knobbed hammersf, the knobs g thereof lying on t the arms above the slots, while the contracted shanks it work in said slots. The construction of the slots and the arrangement of the hammers therein cause the latter to move backward and forward to and from the bell, and to strike the same positively to gain a strong tone, and in one place to prevent adisfiguration of th surface of said bell, as before explained. Above the slots the arms are preferably capped, as shown at m, Fig. 5, said cap closing the slot, and thus holding the hammer in position, and at the same time covering the knobbed extremity to conceal the same and protect it from ice, which might otherwise clog the motion of the hammer. Said cap may, however, be dispensed with, and the slotted extremity be formed as in Fig. 6.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In sleigh-chimes for harness, &c., the combination, with the bell, of the arms d, arranged thereover, and having slots 6 therein,

' and the hammers f, working in said slots, all

substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.

2. In combination, a hell, 0, arms d, arranged thereover, having capped and slotted extremities, and the hammer having the enlarged extremity g, resting above the slot, all substantially as set forth.
