Be" it known that we, WALTER SCOTT, of Hoosic Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of N ew York, and Mosns W. MaNwAu- ING. of the city of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairiield and State of Connecticut, both citi zens'of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sell'-` Extinguishing Lamps, of wliichtlie following` is a specification. i
Our invention relates to a sel f-extinguishing lamp; and the object in view is` to provide ai C forming a part hereof, Figure l is a side clevation, 'partlyin section, of one form of an embodiment of our invention in a lamp, looking toward the broad side, oi' the wick-tube. A represents any suitable burner, having connected with the wick-tube extinguishing devices, which in this instance consist of two pivoted half caps or wings, AQ adapted to be closed over the wick B, to extinguish the flame thereof, by raising the Wire At.

which determines the position oi" the free end of the lever when in a locked position, as when the lamp has` been filled and its push-bar E Q senese vface ot' the top F, and the spring` il' is at that time so disposed as to exert its strain ina line above the Apiveted edge ot" the lever-plate g, and thus hold it slightly in a locked position, so that a lightt'oree exerted upon the depressed free end ot the lever will change the position of the plate, in which position the spring` exerts its strain in a line below the pivoted edge of. the plate and throws the free end ol" the lever forcibly upward against the lower end of the depressedpush-bar, and itin tnrnist'orced against the extinguieher-operating device A3. In this instance a step or projection, l', is formed or located on the i'loatinp` reservoir, so as to come in contact with the l'rec end ol' the lever; but, if desired, said i'ree end ot' the lever may be arranged to be operated by the bot-tom or a side wall ofthe Heating reservoir.
It may bedesirable to connect the floating` reservoir to the body oi'thelam1' in suchmanner as to retain it centrally therein, and yet permit 0f its rising` and falling,` for the purpose described. Uertain means ot' connection are herein illustrated, a-nd comprise pivotal links or hails J, arranged en any two sides of the body and iioating reservoir, and adapted to operate after the manner ot' a gimbal-snpport. The pivoted ends j of' the bailsl'ieingilr serted in slots j, 'termed in the walls oi' the floating` reservoir, permits vert-ical and prevents undue lateral movements ot' the same. lf desired, aspring, K, may bcinterposed between t-helbottoms ot' the lamp body and reservoir, for the purpose ot' conliter-balancing the weight et' the latter, in order that its rising` shall dep,end more :l'ully upon the quantity of oil consumedtherefrom, and thus tend to a more accuratepredetermi nation ol" thelengt-h oi' time which the lalnp shall be allowed to burn before being,` autoii'1:'1t1ic;,lly extinguished.
Other connect-ing;` means between the body and reservoir will readily suggest themselves t to a person skilled in mechanics, and wethere fore do not limit oursel ves to those above described; and, as above indicated, other means or details oi' motion-conveying devices may be interposed between the iloatinc` reservoir and the extingnisher-operating device.

as aforesaid, and various other modified arrangements el' motion-conveying devices may be employed, and are deemed as coniprehended by ourinventiou. It'desired,aiilling-hole, may be provided, but this is not essential, as our invention in no manner affects the removability ofthe burner l'or lilling purposes.
To prevent undue splashing of oil within the reservoir, and to retain the desired quantity of oil against displacement by swaying, jarring, or any ordinary nnlcvel disposition of the la.mp,we provide the floating,` reservoir with a cover, L; but it is perforated centrally at Z t'or the passage ofthe wick.
Having described our invention and its operation, what we claim isl.. A lamp provided with a floating,` rcser voir, an extingusher, and intermediate motionconveying devices, whereby the consumption ot' oil from the reservoir causes it to rise and extinguish the vl'l ame of the lamp, substantially as herein set i'orth.
2. In a lamp, the combination of a floating reservoir, an extinguisher, and'intermediate extinguisher-operating devices, substantially as specified.
3. ln a lamp, the combination of a floating` reservoir, an extingnisl'ter, and an intermediate spring-locked or equivalent extinguisherdevice-om-irating` lever, substantially as specitied.
4. rihc combination of a lamp-body and an internal lloat-ing reservoir with pivoted connecting-hails, to maintain it in proper relation tothe extiluruishing mechanism, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with a lamp, C, provid-ed with extinguishing devices A A2, ot' a tloati ng reservoi r, D, and an intermediate pushbar and pi voted lever,G, substantially asspecitied.
o. The combination of the pushbar E, lever G, plate r/, brackets g', stop y, and spring ll, substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination of the lamp-body C, reservoir l), and bails J J, pivotally secured to the body and to the reservoir in slotsj therein, substantially as shown and described.
