Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.ioHN RYAN, or SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
MINERS COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 291,627, dated-January 8, 1884.
Application filed June 22, 1883. (No model.)
' Lake City, Utah Territory, have invented an Improvement in Miners Combination-Tools, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful combination-tool for the use of miners; and it consists in meansfor holding a candle, for cutting fuse, for pressing the cap thereon, and for sustaining the tool, all of which will hereinafter be fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a perspective view of my combination-tool.
A metal bar, A. is. bent to form a loop, a, for a handle. One of its ends projects to form a point, a, while its other end, which lies along and is secured to the body of the bar, is formed into or has secured to it a socket, b, for holding the candle. On the body of the bar is formed or secured a bearing, 0, in which is pivoted a bar, 0, the upper end of which is formed into a hook, d, and one edge is ground down to form a knife, d; One side of bearing 0 is also ground down to form a cutting-edge or knife 0. In the bearing a is also formeda curved notch or groove, 6, while a corresponding notch, e, is made at the base of bar O.-
The use of this tool is as follows WVhen a convenient side timber is at hand, the point a is driven into it, thereby supporting the candle, which is inserted in socket b upright. If a projecting or overhanging timber is handy, the tool is hung upon it by means of the hook (I. To cut the fuse, it is inserted between the cutters or knives c a, formed on the pivoted bar 0 and the bearing c. To press the cap on the fuse, it is inserted in the notches or grooves e 6, formed in parts a and O.
I am aware that miners candlesticks and fuse-cutters and cap-pressers have been heretofore known; but I am not aware that they have ever been combined at all or to the best advantage wherein the fewest number of parts operate to accomplish the results, and wherein simplicity and economy in construction are effected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I l. In a miners combination-tool, the barA, forming loop a and point a, and having socket 11 formed with or secured thereto, the pivoted bar O, having hook (I, and ground to form a knife or cutter, d, and the knife or cutter c, substantially as herein described.
2. In a miners combination-too], the bar A, forming loop a and point a, and having socket b formed with or secured thereto, the pivoted ,bar 0, having hook (I and notch or groove 6, and
having its edge ground down to form a knife or cutter, d, and the bearing 0, having a notch or groove, 6, and a cutting-edge or knife, 0, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my
