Description

No. 609,720. Patented Aug. 23, I898. E. E. ZINK.
BUTTONHOLE CUTTER.
(Application filed Sept. 9, 1897.)
(No Model.)
NITED v STATES ERNEST E. ZINK, OF KANSAS, ILLINOIS.
BUTTONHOLE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,720, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed September 9, 1897. Serial No. 651,044. (No model.)
zen of the United States, residing at Kansas,
in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the tollowingto be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in buttonhole-cutters, and has'more particular relation to scissor attachments for cutting buttonholes.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side View of a pair of scissors with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of my said attachment; and Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the adjustable slide.
1 in the drawings represents the scissors, and 2 my improved attachment. This latter comprises a metallic spring-clamp portion 3,
adapted to clamp over the blade of the scissors, and a cutting-blade 4, formed integral with said clamping portion and provided with an inclined lower cutting edge 5, terminating at one end in a sharp point 6. The adjustable. slide 7 comprises a spring-yoke adapted to clamp over the lower cutting edge 5, so that it may he slid along the same at will to secure the desired length of buttonhole.
In applying my invention in position one blade of the scissors is forced into the springclamp 3, which latter is preferably bent with the end of the metal much closer to the body portion of the attachment than the upper or loop portion. This forms a spring-clamp approximately wedge-shaped in cross-section and which will firmly grasp the blade of the scissors. When the said attachment is applied to the scissors-blade, the point 6 will project inward and downward, so that when the scissors are operated said point will be the first to pass the cutting edge of theopposite scissor-blade, thus securing a shearing out along the edge 5. The slide '7 will prevent the buttonhole being out past the point at which said slide was placed, as it will contactwith the scissor-blade.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that by the peculiar inclined structure of the cutting edge 5 in relation to the clamp 3 I securea perfect shearing out along said edge 5 and limit said out by the slide 7.
My invention is adapted to be applied to any style of scissors or shears and may be adjusted to any position upon the blades, whereby greater or less leverage may be secured, according to the goods in which the buttonholes are being out.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinationfwith a pair of scissors, of a buttonhole attachment therefor comprising a clamp adapted to be applied to one of the scissors-blades, a cutting-blade thereon, and an adjustable slide consisting of a spring clamping-yoke mounted on said cutting-blade and adapted to coact with the other blade of the scissors.
2. The combination with a pair of scissors, of a buttonhole attachment therefor comprising a spring-clamp adapted to be applied to one of the scissors-blades, a cutting-blade formed integral with said clamp and having an inclined cutting edge formed at its end with a sharp point, and a spring-yoke adapted to slide upon said cutting-blade to form a stop or gage against which the other blade of the scissors is adapted to bear.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
