Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method of conducting a thread initially along a system of rotating rollers the axes of which are mutually inclined for storing and advancing the thread about said rollers in a helical path.
  • this is accomplished by attaching the thread to one of the rollers, allowing a wrap to be built up around said roller, stretching the wrap, placing the wrap around the other roller or other rollers, allowing the wrap to traverse the length of said rollers, carrying with it the on-coming thread and at the end of the traverse severing the wrap and removing it from said rollers.
  • the method according to the invention can only be applied to threads which have such a character that they can resist the stretching necessary to place them around the rollers of the system without breaking. This requirement is met, for example, by starting up the spinning of viscose threads which are advanced and treated with a device as described in the copending application Serial No. 656,303, filed May 1, 1957.
  • the aim of the device claimed in the aforesaid copending application is to treat freshly spun threads with treating liquids in a very compact space; for this reason a long main roller with a great radius is used and a number of counter-rollers with a small radius which are placed close to the main roller.
  • the method according to the invention is especially useful for this device rigorously focused on economy of space and simplicity.
  • Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts in section of a device containing four roller systems consisting of a main roller and a number of counter rollers, the axes of which are mutually inclined.
  • Figure 2 is a front elevational view of Figure 1.
  • the thread 11 leaving the supply station 1, in this case a spinneret, is guided over an arrangement of the continuous roller 14 and the counter-rollers 16 to the arrangement of the continuous roller 17 positioned along several spinnerets and the counter-rollers 18.
  • the roller 17 is successively sprinkled with the aid of the liquid supply means 22, 23, 24 with a dilute acid solution, washing water and bleaching lye.
  • the treating liquids mentioned flow into the vessel 25 and from this vessel through the apertures 27, 28 and 29 into the divided troughs 30, 31 and 32. So as to separate the various liquids on the roller system the rollers are provided with flanges 16a or the like.
  • the thread After leaving the rollers 17, 18 the thread reaches the roller system 19, 20. With the aid of washing water from the vessel 33 a last washing takes place. Then the thread is guided to the roller system 2121a, the continuous roller 21 of which is internally heated with steam. Thus the thread is dried.
  • the threading up of the roller system 1416 takes place as follows: the thread coming out of the spinning bath is placed onto the rotating roller 14. In this way a small band is formed around said roller on the spot where the thread has been placed onto that roller. After a small band with a certain thickness has been formed it is stretched and placed about the roller 16 after which the band travels in helical turns over a roller system 14-16.
  • roller systems For the starting-up of the advancing of highly stretchable threads roller systems may be used in which the rollers have the same radius and in which they are not close to each other. Moreover the starting-up method according to the invention may be used for roller systems in which the thread travels around more than two rollers.
  • the invention is not limited to the starting-up of the advancing of threads, but is also suitable for the advancing of ribbons and tubes.
  • a method of conducting a stretchable thread initially along a system of rotating mutually inclined rollers in a succession of helical loops which comprises attaching the thread to one of the rollers, allowing a wrap to be built up around said roller, stretching the wrap, placing the wrap around at least one other roller of the system, allowing the wrap to traverse the length of said rollers, carrying with it the on-coming thread, and at the end of the traverse severing the wrap and removing it from said rollers.
