BREASTPIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `Patent No. 291,564, dated January 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DEWEY F. ADAMs, of the city and county of Providence, and Sta-te of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breastpins; and I do hereby declare the following specication, taken in connectionl with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description thereof.

This invention relates to a breastpin the front of which is composed of glass or other material capable of being molded into shape, and the back of which is metal; and it consists in providing the back 4with one or more fastening plugs or dowels of such shape as to form substantially a dovetail connection with the front, and in securing the back to the front by imbedding the fastening plug or plugs in the material composing the front while it is in a soft or plastic state, whereby the back can not become loose or separated from the front, as will hereinafter appear. i

Referring to the drawings, the several Figures l, 2, and 3 represent side views, partially in section, of breastpins embodying the improvement, with fastening plugs or dowels of various shapes.

A is the front, of glass or other material which may be made soft and plastic, so as to be molded into any preferred shape or design. The back of thebreastpin is composed of two members-the j oint-piece b and the catch b', the former being the member to which the usual pin,c,is pivoted, and thelatter the member which receives the point of the pin. As shown in Fig. l, the members b b are separately attached to the frontA by fastening plugs or dowels d, which are secured to said members, respectively, by solder, or are integral therewith, the shape of the plugs or dowels being substantially conical. the members b b are connected with each other by a plate, e, to which the fasteningplugs d are secured, one of said plugs being shown as L shape and the other in the form of an inverted T. In Fig. Sthe membersb b are connected with each other by a bent Wire, d, which is attached to said members and forms the fastening plug or dowel.

The plugs or dowels d are inserted into the material composing the front, or such material is molded around the plugs when it is in a soft or plastic state, thereby incasing them and firmly holding the members b b in place when said material becomes hard, and the shape of 5 5 dowels, d, shaped substantially as described,

the said fastening-dowels being embedded in and incased `by the material composing the front, and thereby holding the back in place, substantially as set forth.
