UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN' H. LONG, '0E MUNcIE, INDIANA.
FOLDINGTABLE.
`SlllfJIlICA'IJION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,525, dated January 8, 1884.
.Application filed March 22, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, NATHAN H; LONG, a
` citizen ofthe United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Io jects of my improvements are to construct a cheap, durable, and convenient table or bench with a rod forming a spring for the folding legs. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of my invention combined. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same with a part broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the rod,
.and Fig. 5 is a view of the invention folded Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. V
The table-top A is made of wood, of a convenient size and shape. At each end of the under side of the said top is secured the stay or batten bars Il and a, as shown in Fig. l. l' The side bars, B, and cross-bars t" i G C C C constitute the bench part of my invention when combined with the folding legs and mechanism. The legs f are pivoted to the ends of the bar 'i' by it being rounded off on the said ends and passing through the said legs, as shown at f in Figs. l and 5. The said legs f f are all secured together by a round, y, so that the upper ends of the legs f are made to slide over the bar C and notches G', as shown in Fig. 1. The rod, consisting of the parts a b, is secured to the bar G at one end by a screw, a, and at the other end by a staple, e, being secured over it. This rod is bent in the shape most clearly shown in Figs. l and 4, the part a being made of iron wire, and the part b is made `of spring-wire. The two pieces are connected together at a', as shown in Figs. l and 4.- The round e works between the wirea and bar G, a groove, e', being cut around the said round, so that the wire Works init, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. When the table is standing, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the rod is nearer to the joint c. In moving toward the said joint, the round springs the wire a down slightly, the said spring coming from the part b, which works freely in the staple c. The spring-pressure on the round c causes the npper ends of the legs f to drop into the notches C', which are cut into the bar C or table-top a few inches apart, so that the height of the table can beyaried as desired.
The bench part of my invention is attached to the table-top by one end of the side bars being beveled off, as shown' at B', to fit .in and against the ends of the bar t', the other end being fastened by the batten a, which prevents a longitudinal movement in the bench-frame, and an ordinary hook, S, being hooked to the bar i, preventing the top A from being lifted off of the frame.
The rod a b may be attached to the tabletop directly as well 4as to the bar G. The notches C may be cut in the under side of the top, and the legs f also attached to the top A, so that the table can be made with folding legs without the bench parts, if so desired. i
The spring-rod, as shown in Fig. 4, may be made of one solid piece of spring or iron wire of the Vsame form, as shown, (except the joint a.)
By the foregoing specification it can be seen that my improvements are adapted to and can be'applied and used as afolding table, bench, or ironing-board, as the top can be readily attached and detached from the bench paraat will.
Having thus described my invention, I claim the following, and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent:
The combination, with the table top provided on each side of its under surface with notches, of pivoted legs f f Vand legs f2 f2, the latter being connected by a grooved roundjfe, and a rod secured to the table-top, said rod consisting of a rigid wire portion, and aspringwire portion, and adapted to rest in the groove of the round e, substantially as set forth.
NATHAN H. LoNG.
