Description

(No Model.)
' W. H. CARR.
FOLDING TABLE.
Patented Aug. 8, 1882.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES N. PETERS. man-um NITED STATES WILLIAM H. CARE, OF COLUMBUS, INDIANA.
FOLDING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,206, dated August 8, 1882.
Application filed April 28. 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. CARR, of Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Folding Tables;
, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference b'einghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the under side of my improved table while folded. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the table extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection on linear/=00, Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to folding tables; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the top or plate of my improved table.
B is a strap or casting secured transversely under the top A, near one end thereof, and provided with down ward-depending brackets or hangers C- C, to which the outer legs, D D, are securely pivoted. The outer ends of said legs are connected, as shown, by a similar strap, E, which braces them securely Without being in the way of the inner legs, FF. Said inner legs are to be exactly ot' the same length as the outer legs, D, to which they are pivoted X-wise by centrally-located pivot-bolt, G, so that at any point to which they may be extended the said legs will hold the top A, which they support, in a true level position. Theinner legs, F F, are connected near their ends by rounds H I. To the upper one of said rounds, H, are secured the ends of a spring, J, which is coiled around said round so as to form a loop or bail, K, which embraces a rod, L, secured longitudinally under the table-top A, one of its ends being secured near the end of said top and the other to a batten, M, secured transversely under the top plate, A, near its (No model.)
center. By securing one end of the rod L to the batten M a small space is left between the said rod and the table-top, enabling the springloop K to slide or move freely. The upper ends of the inner legs, F, are beveled, so as to engage a series of notches, N, in the under side of the table-top.
O is a drawer arranged to slide in suitable cleats transversely under the table-top adjoining the batten M. When the legs of the table are folded they fit adjoining the ends of said drawer, which is thereby kept closed, so that the table, when folded, may be conveniently handled without danger of losing its contents.
The operation of myinvention will be readily understood. When the legs are extended the upper ends of the inner legs, F, are held by the spring-100p K securely engaging the notches N, in which they may have been adjusted, so that the table may be lifted and moved from place to place without danger of the legs dropping out.
The construction is simple, convenient,,and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention,Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the table-top A, the strap or casting B, having hangers G, the outer 1egs,D, pivoted to said hangers, the innerlegs, F, of equal length with legs D,'to which they are connected by central pivoting-bolt, the round H, spring J, having loop K, and the rod L, substantially as set forth.
. 2. The combination of the table-top A, having notches N and batten M, the rod L, having one end secured to said batten and the other near the end of the table-top, the legs D D, hinged under the table, and the legs F F, pivoted to legs D D, having round H, and spring J provided with loop K, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
