FOLDING CAMP BED.
(Application filed Muv. 28, 1897.)
(No Model.)
PNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN LONG, OF MEX IA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO B. W. SIMMONS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING CAMP-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,176, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed November 26, 1897. Serlalllo. 659,894. (No model.)
To-all whom it may concern;
Be it known that, I, REUBEN LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mexia, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Camp-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention consists of the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be folded in compact form to reduce the space of occupany thereof both in storage and transportation and which may also be quickly set up in operative position, the parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, easily and readily handled, and comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a camp bed or cot embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 isa detail perspective view of the device shown folded. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the device as shown by Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several Views, the numeral 1 designates the main body or section, having hinged to opposite ends thereof end sections 2 and 3, which have at theirv points of jointure with the opposite ends of the main section 1 plates 4, provided with outwardly-projecting flanges 5, adapted to contact with each other and sustain the adjustment of the said end sections 2 and 3 when arranged for use. The end cross-pieces of the end sections 2 and 3 are divided at the center and connected by hinges 6 and at the outer ends are also hinged, as at 7 t0 the side pieces of the said end section. One of the divided cross-pieces of the said end sections in each instance carries a slotted keeper 8, which is movable in a guide 9 and is adapted to register with and enter a loop 10, carried by the adjacent piece, and through the means of this keeper the end cross-pieces are held rigid when the device is adjusted for use. To the inner portions of the side rails of the section 1 supporting-legs 11 are hinged and have attached thereto flat braces 12, which are jointed at the center or near the center and prevent the said legs from falling down outwardly. Extending across the outer edges of each pair of legs are arms 13,which are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the said legs and in like manner jointed at the center. These arms 13 are attached to the said legs near the upper terminations of the latter, and near the lower ends of said legs another pair of arms 14 and 15 are pivotally attached and are movably connected to each other, as at 16. The arm 15 is longer than the arm 14 and extends across and connects to one of the arms 13, and by this means a substantial lazy-tongs connection is provided which when pressed down to a certain point provides a lock to prevent accidental collapsing of the said legs and the bed or cot to which they are attached. These devices act as an auxiliary to the keepers 8 and prevent'breakage of the parts, as well as serve in the capacity stated. They also form cross-braces for the legs, and when moved upwardly toward the body of the bed they permit the said legs to be drawn toward each other to accommodate a lateral contraction of the several parts of the bed or cot.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the bed or cot can be reduced to a very compact form and especially adapt the device for campuses. The end sections and the main body-section are covered by a continuous web 17, which may be of any preferred material, and all the parts are strongly connected to resist strain and wear.
Changes in the minor details of construction, proportions, and dimensions might be resorted to and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character set forth,
the combination of a main body-section, end sections hinged thereto, plates having laterally-extending flanges adapted to engage each other, carried by the main body and end sections, jointed end pieces for the said end sections, sliding keepers adapted to engage and cross the joints in the end sections, and folding legs, substantially as described.
2. In a cot or bed of the character set forth, the combination with a main body portion having hinged end extensions and jointed end pieces adapted to fold inwardly, of legs hinged to the main body-section, hinged braces connecting said legs to the body-section, and a series of arms extending across from one leg to the other, and adapted to fold to permit the legs to be drawn toward each other, substantially as described.
3. In a bed or cot of the character set forth, the combination of a main body-section havin g end sections hinged thereto and all adapted to be contracted laterally and the end sections having jointed end bars adapted to fold inwardly, and provided with adjustable keepers and adjustable legs attached to the said main body-section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
REUBEN LONG.
