To a whom it may concern.- Be it known thatI, WILLIAM S. DAWSON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Gisco,

in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois,

have invented anew and useful Device for Holding Bolts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to devices for holding bolts and it has for its object to provide a device adapted to hold and secure bolts from turning while nuts are being screwed on or oif of the same, thereby facilitating the removal or insertion of said nuts.

To this end it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device, illustrating its mode of operation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates my improved device, consisting of a curved hook, B, bifurcated or slotted at a, the lever G being pivoted in the slotted upper end of the hook by means of a set or thumb screw, D. A portion of the lever adjacent to its pivotal attachment to the hook is cut away, as shown at c, to permit said lever to be inserted in the bifurcated upper end of the hook, and also to allow the free movement of said hook, and a series of openings, d e, are formed in the hook and lever, respectively, in order to permit the vertical or longitudinal adjustment of said hook to provide for varying lengths of bolts, and also for the distance which the bolts may be from the edge of the plate or timber E. The lever O is provided with a handle, F, at its rear end, the front portion of the lever being curved and provided with a downward extension, G, the latter having on its end a double series of serrations or teeth, 9, which bind against the upper face of the bolt, and thus serve to hold the same. The operation of my invention will be &

such a pressure is brought to bear between the bolt and the plate to which it is attached that the bolt cannot turn, and thus the operator is enabled to readily remove or insert a nut. 1

The advantages of a device for holding the nuts from turning are too well known to be recited here; but my device has special advantages over like articles. The double series of serrations or teeth give a firm hold to the bolt, so that slipping of the device will be avoided, while the peculiar manner of pivoting the lever is specially advantageous as conveying considerable power of pressure.

The vertical and longitudinal adjustment of the hook permits the device to be applied to turning bolts of varying lengths, and consequent greater widths of plates or timber to which such bolts are generally applied, while its longitudinal adjustment allows for turning bolts at increased distances from the edge of the plate, since the device can then reach farther underneath the same.

My device is simple, durable, and inexpensive, and in operation is efficient, readily per forming its necessary functions.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
