WITNESSES ATTORNEYS n. PETERS. mowumo un Wam m. n c.
" UNITED STATES PATENT OFF IcEQ CHARLES J. GRAIN GER, IOF HOUSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. W.
DIBRELL, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
REMOVABLE CAN-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,885, dated December 25, 1883.
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O. J GRAINGER, a citizen of the United States, resident at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Tops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- 2 is a vertical sectional view of a can with the improved can-top in place thereon, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the can-top.
This invention has relation to can-tops, its primary and principal object being the protection of the contents of all cans to which it may be fitted from the inroads of insects, suchas ants, flies, roaches, &c.
It consists of a can top or protector to be fitted over the top of a can which has had one of its heads out out in such manner that the contents of the can can be easily and conveniently removedand, should it be desired,
the life and usefulness of the can prolonged ata trifling expense, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularlypointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the can-top, having the external annular spring-flange, b, soldered to its under face in the usual-manner of forming can-covers.
c designates the central opening in the cover, having the upwardly-extending annular flange d, and e is theflanged lid hinged to coverthe opening in the can-top.
Application filed September 24, 1853. [NO model.)
f is the finger-piece by which the lid is opened and closed.
The cans to which the tops are to be fitted are those already in the market-via, one, two, and three pound cans, all cans being made in regular sizes of pounds-containing condensed milk, canned meats, fruits,'vegetables, and the like. Whenever these-cans are to be used, one of the heads should be cut out and one of my can-tops fitted over it, when the contents can be removed with a spoon or other article, access being hadthrough the openingvby raising the lid. If not wholly removed, the remainder of the contents may be protected until needed for use.
When the contents of a can have been exhausted, the can may be cleansed and used for other articles.
The simplicity and utility of the invention are obvious, and need no further explanation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The can-top described, consisting of the horizontal annular portion at, having the central annular aperture, '0, and vertical flange (2, external spring-flangab, secured to its under surface, and the hinged lid e, for closing the said aperture, having an under annular flange and an upper thumb-piece, all adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
oHAs. J. GRAINGER.
