Description

April 2, 1957 H. w. HERMAN 2,787,399
COMBINATION LID Filed Aug. 2, 1954 FIGJ. 32 2o uvvzzvrox HAROLD WILLIAM HERMAN 1 ATToNEYs United States Patent COMBINATION LID Harold William Herman, Berkley, Mich.
Application August 2, 1954, Serial No. 447,203
2 Claims. .(Cl. 220-42) This invention relates generally to sanitary receptacles and more particularly to a combination lid for a. garbage can or pail.
One object of this invention is to provide a combination lid for a garbage pail which is designed to make it possible to keep the entire pail spotless-1y clean throughout long periods of use. The inside of a garbage pail may be easily rinsed out before each using, but the top and bottom rims and the outside of the p=ail are usually very diflicult to clean. The present construction is especially designed to overcome these diffioulties.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide an annular sheet-metal member dimensioned to removably fit over the top edge of the garbage pail having inner and outer depending annular flanges respectively extending downwardly along the inner and outer sides of the side wall of the pail, and a removable lid resting on the annular member and having a flange on the under side dimensioned to fit closely within the inner flange of the annular member.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent [as the following description proceeds, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a garbage pail, partly in section, constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is similar to Figure 1, showing the parts separated; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view.
The matter of keeping garbage pails clean and sanitary is of particular concern to establishments which serve food to the public, and while the present construction is especially suited for use by such establishments, it will be understood that the present construction has l9. much wider range of use and may be used to advantage by persons in various other circumstances, such as for home use.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, a garbage can or pail is generally indicated :at It having a bottom Wall or base 12 land a cylindrical side wall 14 extending upwardly from the bottom wall and being open at the top. Handles 15 are provided on opposite sides of side wall 14.
The cover or lid structure for the pail It) is indicated generally by the numeral 16 and comprises an annular rim member 18 and a lid 20. The rim member is designed to removably fit over the top edge of the side wall 14 of the pzail. Rim member 18 is provided with 21 depending annular flange 22 which is adapted to ex tend downwardly along the outer side of the upper portion of side wall 14 and is dimensioned to have a rather close fit therewith. A bead 24 extending around the outer side of side wall 14 is located so as to be engaged by the lower margin of flange 22 when the annular rim member is seated upon the top edge of the pail.
The annular rim member 18 also has an inner depending annular flange 26 which extends downwardly "ice per extremities of the flanges 22 and 26 is an annular connecting portion 28 which may, if desired, be formed integrally with the outer flange 22.
The annular rim member 18 composed of the outer and inner flanges 22 and 26 and the connecting portion 28, will be seen to be of inverted channel cross-section dimensioned to receive the upper edge of the side wall of the pail when the rim member is applied thereto shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It will be seen that the connecting portion 28 extends inwardly from the outer flange 22 and slightly upwardly to a point such that its inner annular margin 29 is spaced a substantial distance radially inwardly of the inner side of the side wall 14 of the pail and that the inner flange 26 extends downwardly from the inner margin of the connecting portion and thus likewise is spaced a considerable distance from the inner side of side wall 14. The inner flange 26 may be soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the connecting portion 28 to provide a structural unit.
It will be noted that the upper margin of the inner flange 26 is formed with an inwardly directed annular lip 30.
Extending across the opening defined by the inner flange 26 of the rim member is the removable lid 20 which may comprise a generally circular sheet-metal member 32 having the edge portion turned over upon itself as shown at 33 and resting upon the connecting portion 28 of the rim. member in the assembled relation shown in Figure 1. The circular lid member has secured to the under side thereof an annular depending flange 34 dimensioned to fit closely within the lip of the inner flange 26 to assist in retaining the lid in assembled relation therewith. As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the flange 34 has an outwardly turned portion 35 held between the turned edge of the circular part 32 of the cover. A handle 36 is secured centrally to the top side of the circular member 32. Handles 38 also may be provided on diametrically opposite sides of the rim member.
During normal use, the rim member is applied as shown in Figures 1 and 3 and the lid is normally also in place on the rim member but removed when garbage material is to be put in the pail. It will be apparent that the upper edge portion of side wall 14 of the pail is completely shielded by the rim member 18 and will not be exposed to garbage material dumped into the pail. Furthermore, it will be noted that the size of the opening defined by the inner flange 26 of the rim member is considerably smaller than the outside diameter of the side wall 14 of the pail so that there is little chance for garbage to come in contact with or run down or stain the outer side of side wall 14. In the same manner, the bottom rim 40 of the pail is also kept free of contact with garbage material.
Before each using, it is a simple matter to flush or rinse out the inside of the pail. The annular rim member will probably contain stains and deposits of garbage material which are more difficult to clean, but this member may be given a thorough cleansing in the washing equipment provided for pots and pans. The lid 18 may be Washed in a like manner.
The parts of the garbage pail which are difficult to clean by a mere rinsing with a hose, for example, are thus protected and the removable rim member and lid are of a size which can be conveniently subjected to a thorough cleaning action.
When garbage material is not actually being deposited in the pail, the lid should, of course, be applied for sanitary reasons.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination, a sanitary receptacle for garbage and the like having an annular side wall and an open top, an annular sheet metal member of inverted channel cross-section removably fitting over the top edge of said side wall and defining an opening into said receptacle, said member having a radially inner depending annular flange extending downwardly :along the inner side of the upper portion of said side Wall and a radially outer depending annular flange extending downwardly along the outer side of the upper portion of said side wall, and an annular portion connecting the upper extremities of said flanges and extending over the top edge of said side wall, said outer flange encircling and closely embracing s aid side wall and said inner flange being spaced substantially radially inwardly of said side wall about its entire periphery, said member having an annular lip at the upper extremity of said inner flange extending radially inwardly therefrom and defining the opening into said receptacle.
2. Structure as defined in claim l including a' removable lid extending across said inner flange having its marginal edges resting on said member, and an annular depending flange on the underside of said lid dimensioned to fit closely within said annular lip.
