UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI HAAS, on cnnsrnn, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR SILL AND STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,878, dated December 25, 1883.
Application filed June 13,1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI HAAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Sills and Steps, of which the following is a specification, refcrence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in door-steps, having for its object to replace the ordinary wooden door-steps with a more durable and equally as cheap material, and which shall possess a more presentable and neater appearance, besides adapting the same to serve in the capacity of aweather-strip for the lower edge of the door; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under side view of one of the foot-pieces of the steps. Fig. 3 is a plan of the topmost step, which forms the threshold and weather-strip for the lower edge of the door. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 5 is an inverted view of a modified form thereof, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section and a longitudinal section of the same.
In the organization of my invention I construct the individual steps A A thereof of cast or sheet metal, the horizontal or foot part of one step being adjusted to the vertical part of the other step by means of a tongue, a, Fig. 6, formed in the upper edge of and about half the thickness of said edge of one part, and fitting into a recess, a, proportionally deep in the lower edge of the other part, as seen in Fig. 4, said steps being held in place with relation to the house by studs or projectionsb 1), formed upon the topmost step, and caused to enter the walls of the dwelling or house, or the door-frame thereof. The topmost step, which is adapted to fit in the doorway. it will be seen, has its inner edge formed with a convex flange, G, which acts inthe capacity of aweatherstrip for the lower edge of the door. The ends, as also the fronts or vertical parts, may be apertured after any suitable configuration for ventilation thereunder and ornamentation. The underneath or inner surfaces of the horizontal parts of the steps are cast with reenforcing ribs D, or otherwise strengthened. The topmost step is formed with a grated surface upon its upper exterior, to prevent the possibility of slipping and falling thereon.
This invention, which, as before stated, is made of sheet or other suitable metal, is strong, durable, and attractive, and is designed to replace the common wooden door-steps, which render this improvement greatly desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In door-steps, the steps A, made of cast, sheet, or other suitable metal, with the topmost step provided with securing studs or projections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The door-steps composed of the steps A, having the weather-strip and securing-studs, and the upper edge of one step provided with a tongue and the lower edge of the other step provided with a recess to receive said tongue, while the under side of the horizontal or foot pieces of the steps are ribbed or re-enforced, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI HAAS.
Vitnesses:
EDMUND J onus, H. J. WALTER.
