K ll? A United States Patent INDUSTRIAL GARBAGE CAN John B. Perez, Tampa, Fla. Application February 8, 1956, Serial No. 564,267
2 Claims. (Cl. 2204) This invention generally relates to an improved receptacle construction and more specifically provides an improved garbage receptacle which is especially adapted for heavy use such as in a commercial or industrial establishment.
An object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can or receptacle including a side wall constructed of sectional elements together with a replaceable and detachable bottom member together with a bumper flange extending peripherally about the side wall in spaced relation to the bottom.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can having means for securing the garbage can in proper relation to a supporting surface and also to provide a closure that is releasably but rigidly held in closed position. p t a t A further object of the presentninvention is to pro- 2 Figure 5 isa detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 5-5 of Figure 3 illustrating the construction of the inwardly extending hand holds for carrying the garbage can;
Figure 6 is a detailed view illustrating the attachment between the bottom of the. side wall and the bottom member; and
preferably cylindrical and supported on any suitable surface 18 to permit ready access thereto for dumping by garbage collectors.
The side wall 12 includes an elongated cylindrical upper section 20'and a relatively short cylindrical lower section 22 which is slightly larger in diameter than the upper section 20. The upper section 20 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed inwardly extending indented portions 24 having a generally horizontal upper wall 26 which form hand holds for the garbage can 10. Also disposed on the upper section 20 of the side wall 12 is a U-shaped bracket 28 having the free ends of the legs 30 attached to the upper section 20 as by t J welding 32 or the like. The legs 30 have an aperture vide a garbage can in accordance with the preceding ob-,
jects which includes inwardly extending hand holds.
thereby eliminating the usual pivotal handles on the garbage can which are subject to extensive damage and actual loss from the garbage can thereby rendering the garbage can extremely hard to use.
Yet another important object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can including a detachable peripheral flange projecting outwardly from the side wall about the periphery thereof to reinforce the Side wall and to eliminate and prevent bending damage to the garbage can.
Yet another very important feature of the present invention is to provide a garbage can having a removable bottom with a coating of gasket material thereon :for protection on the bottom and also for protection of the seam or juncture between the bottom and side wall for sealing the bottom to the side wall.
Other objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of operation, adaptation for its particular purpose and its relative inexpensive manufacturing cost. 7
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garbage can of the present invention; 1
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the elements of the garbage can;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of Figure 1 illustrating the details of construction of the garbage can;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 4-4 of Figure 3 illustrating the relationship of the various elements of the garbage can;
'34 therein with the apertures 34 being in vertical alignment for receiving a positioning post 36 which is inserted into the supporting surface 18 for positioning the garbage can 10 and preventing the wind, animals or The lower end of the upper section 21) of the side wall 12 is provided with an integral downwardly opening channel 38 having spaced legs 40 and 42 with the leg 40 being connected to the upper section 20 by reversely bent portion 4-4 The spaced walls 40 and 42 of the downwardly opening channel shaped flange 38 provides an annular slot or groove 46 for receiving the upper end of the lower section 22. The legs 40 and 42 of the channel shaped groove 38 and the upper end of the lower section 22 are all provided with apertures 48 which may be registrable for receiving a screw threaded fastener 50 having a wing type head 52 thereon for screw threaded engagement with an internally threaded aperture 54 in the lower end of the top section 20 of the sidewall 12. An L-shaped peripheral flange generally designated by the numeral 56 is provided with a vertical flange portion 58 having an aperture 60 therein forreceiving the fastening bolt 50 and also is provided with a horizontal flange 62 projecting outwardly from the side wall 12. Accordingly, the fastening member 50 extends through the aligned apertures 60, 48 and is in screw threaded engagement with the aperture 54 thereby locking the upper and lower sections 20 and 22 together and also mounting the annular flange 56 thereon. The projectin horizontal flange 62 acts as a protective bumper for the side wall 12 and reinforces the same and prevents bendingof the side wall 12. The horizontal flange 62 is also provided with an aperture 64 for receiving the vertical post 36 thereby still further preventing displacement of the garbage can 10.
The upper end of the upper section 20 is provided with an annular rib 66 for receiving a depending flange 68 on a circular plate 70 which forms the closure means 14. The depending flange 68 is provided with an inwardly extending annular recess 72 for forming a hand hold for removing and replacing the closure top 14. A plurality of set screws 74 arethreaded through the lower end of the depending flange; 68 for engagement with the outer periphery .of theupper section 26 below the rib 66 thereby securely and rigidly fastening the closure top 14 in position.
Referring now specifically to Figures 3 and 6, it will be noted that the bottom assembly 16 generally includes a circular bottom plate member 76 having a depending peripheral flange 78 terminating in an upwardly-opening channel shaped member 80. the channel shaped flange or member 80 are each provided with aligned openings 82 for receiving a screw threaded fastener84 having a wing nut type head 86 thereon. The walls of the channel shaped member 80 form an upwardly opening groove or slot 83 for receiving the lower end of the lower section 22 of the side wall 12 which also is provided with a series of circumferentially spaced apertures 90 for alignment with the apertures 82 whereby -the;screw threaded fastener 84 may be inserted through the aligned apertures 82 and 90 for assembling the bottom assembly '16-onto the side wall assembly 12. The inner surface of the bottom plate member 76, the flange 78 and the channel shaped portion 80 is covered with .a gasket or gasket material 92 wherein the lower end of the lower section 22 of the side wall 12 will be engaged by the gasket 92 on both sides thereof and the screw threaded fastener 84 may be inserted through the screw threaded openings 82 and 90 which are in registry and also through openings 94 in the gasket 92 thereby securely fastening the bottom assembly 16 to the side wall 12 in sealed relation thereby forming a fluid tight container or receptacle. Of course, the bottom assembly may be replaced when necessary or the bottom section 22 or the top section or the closure means 14 may be replacedif any of the elements become damaged from use.
The annular horizontal flange 62 forms a reinforcement and also a protective bumper for the side wall and the post 36 retains the garbage can 10 in the desired position. The'top construction or closure means 14 reinforces the upper end of the container and permits the closure means 14 to be rigidly secured into position or permits access to the interior of the garbage can. The particular detachable construction of the bottom assembly '16 permits replacement thereof and the gasket 92 acts as a protector for the bottom plate 76 as well as seals the bottom assembly 16 to the side wall 12. The depending flange 78 and the bottom of the channel Shaped member 80 forms a supporting ring for the garbage can 10 thereby retaining the bottom plate 76 in spaced .relation to the supporting surface 18 and also rigidifies the entire construction due to the reverse bends formed in the relatively thin sheet metal metals from which the side wall, bottom plate and closure are formed.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and de- The Walls or legs of the channel and the lower edge of the wall member,.
