This invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers and has particular reference to a container utilizing a bail ear and a freely movable bail. The adaptation of this invention is particularly applicable to containers having paper or fibrous body walls and metal ends.

One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a freely movable bail carried by a novel bail ear to be affixed to a container having paper or fibrous side walls with metal ends and further a bail car which can be securely aflixed to such a container after the container has been filled with a product, the closure placed thereon, and the container labeled by the use of ordinary standard machine methods.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel bail ear securely fastened to the rim of the can top, and one which is not required to be attached to the side wall of the container.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a bail ear of simple construction, one that may be manufactured at a minimum of cost and one which, While particularly adapted to containers of paper or fibrous side walls with metal ends, may equally well be used upon containers of every description.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims which follow.

Figure l is a front elevational view of a container having the novel bail ears attached thereto and showing a bail in a carrying position.

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the bail ear attached to the top rim of a container and carrying a bail in a lowered position, the container and hail being shown fragmentarily.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the bail ear secured to a container, and the manner of attaching the bail to the bail ear.

In the drawing, in which like characters designate the respective parts in all the views, the numeral 5 indicates an ordinary container having side walls 6 preferably of fibrous material. In the manufacture of the preferred container, there is provided a closure top I having a vertically extending annular peripheral flange 8 to snugly engage the inner wall of the body 6. After filling the container, the closure top I is pressed a suitable distance therein, leaving a portion of the flange 8 extending beyond the body wall Ii. As illustrated in Figure 3, the portion of the fiange 8 extending beyond the body 6 is bent over the upper edge of the body 6 and by which there is provided a recessed to-p having a metallic peripheral rim I'IJ.

:After completing the closure of the container 5, the container is free to have a label placed around the outer, wall of the body 6 in any suitable manner without the usual necessary cut outs having to be made in the label by reason of bail ears already having been affixed. It will be understood that the specific construction of the container is not a particular part of my invention, but that the form of construction shown has been chosen merely as a preferred illustration of a container having a fibrous body and metallic top, to which the novel bail ear may be applied.

As illustrated in the drawing and. more in detail in Figure 3,.the bail ear I I is formed from ordinary sheet-metal material and comprises a circular raised boss I2 in the form of a housing and an elongated flange I3. The ear I I is pressed to an arcuate configuration to conform to the contour of the body 6, and the upper portion of the flange I3 is bent to a substantially U-shaped configuration I4 to snugly conform to the metallic rim III. The raised circular boss I2 is pro vided with a centrally disposed opening I5 for the reception of one end of a bail handle I6. The end of the bail I6 is inserted in the opening I5 and bent at a sharp angle at II, the bail I6 thereby being held in permanent engagement With the ear II. After securing the end of bail I6 in the ear II in the manner described, the ear II may be secured to the container. The U-shaped portion I I of the ear I I is placed upon the metallic rim II) and is securely afiixed, as at I8, to the metallic rim I!) by soldering, welding or other suitable means. The lower portion of the ear I I is positioned adjacent the exterior wall of the fibrous body 6.

The arcuate configuration of the ear II, while giving added appearance to the ear when positioned on the container, is principally for the purpose of affording additional strength thereto, it being noted that the lower portion thereof is in no way affixed to the fibrous body 6.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a metallic bail ear which may be attached to a container having a fibrous wall, and one that can be attached after the label has been placed thereon, thereby obviating the necessity of providing out out portions in the label to accommodate the bail ears, which is necessary when the ears are attached prior to the labelling of the container.

It will also be further seen that I have provided a bail ear which is securely and readily attached to the rim of the container top by a simple soldering or welding operation, thereby saving considerable time and expense over previous methods in which it is necessary to attach the bail ears to the fibrous walls by rivets or other fasteners.

I claim:

1. In combination, a cylindrical fibrous container having a recessed metallic top crimped onto the outer side wall by which is provided a vertically extending metallic flange on the upper margin of said body, said container being charac-' terized in that it is provided with a sheet metal bail ear conforming to the contour of the outer wall of said body consisting of an inverted U- shaped upper portion, the inner surface of which is soldered upon the outer surface of said marginal flange, and a lower portion held adjacent the outer wall of said body consisting of a boss in the form of a housing having an aperture for the reception of a wire bail, the U-shaped portion being located in a radial plane with said housing.

2. In combination, a cylindrical fibrous container having a recessed metallic top crimped onto the outer side wall by which is provided a vertically extending metallic flange on the upper margin of said body, said container being characterized in that it is provided with a sheet metal bail ear conforming to the contour of the outer wall of said body consisting of an inverted U- shaped upper portion, the inner surface of which is permanently secured to the outer surface of said marginal flange, and a lower portion held adjacent the outer wall of said body consisting of a boss in the form of a housing having an aperture for the reception of a wire hail, the U-shaped portion being located in a radial plane with said housing.

3. In combination, a cylindrical fibrous container having a recessed metallic top crimped onto the outer side wall by which is provided a vertically extending metallic flange on the upper margin of said body, said container being characterized in that it is provided with a sheet metal bail ear conforming to the contour of the outer wall of said body consisting of an inverted U- shaped upper portion, the inner surface of which is permanently secured at its end edges to the outer surface of said marginal flange, and a lower portion held adjacent the outer wall of said body consisting of a boss in the form of a housing having an aperture for the reception of a Wire bail, the U-shaped portion being located in a radial plane with said housing.
