(01. 2120- 25) My invention relates to closures for receptacles, particularly urns, or containers used for shipping, storage or burial of incinerated or cremated remains of human bodies; and its objects are to providea hermetic seal effectually excluding from admission to said urns or containers deleterious, contaminating or obnoxious gases, liquid or solid matter which might cause injury tosuch remains; to furnish a closure the parts of which can be economically constructed and with great saving of labor stamped or formed from sheet metal through the use of simple dies or forming tools; to allow the closure readily to be opened or closed with minimurn'of effort and without requiring the use of special-tools for such purpose, and to permit the ready introduction or removal of said remains within or from said container and inspection thereof whenever found necessary or desirable; .to render the parts easily accessible for replacement or repair, and generally to provide a device which is simple of construction, efiicient in action and will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
My invention primarily consists in depressing the edge of the circular outlet of a receptacle to form a ledge having an annular rounded channel therein, and in providing a cover closure plate of larger size than said outlet and extending over and beyond the same; the said closure plate having a downwardly depending rib or flange shaped closely to engage with said channel and an opening through which passes a bolt or screw in screw threaded engagement with a bar within said receptacle positioned to engage with the under face of said ledge; whereby upon tightening the said bolt or screw a hermetic seal as between said plate and receptacle is firmly effected.
My invention further consists of other novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of elements or parts, illustrated in the drawing and as hereinafter more particularly set forth and described.
Attention is hereby directed to the drawing, illustrating a preferred form of my invention, in which similar numerals of designation refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing a conventional memorial urn or receptacle for the reception and preservation of cremated remains of a human body, and showing my improved form of closure applied to the outlet thereof;

I Referring to .thedrawing, extending through the top, bottom or one of the side walls of the conventional urn or receptacle 4, Iform the outlet 5, preferably circular in form, and large enough to permit the ready introduction into the hollow of said urn of the incinerated or cremated remains of a human body, and subsequently to allow the inspection at any time of such remains or the removal thereof should occasion'require. As shown, the wall of the urn adjacent to the edge of said outlet 5 is stamped or tooled to form the annular curved ledge 6, having the rounded channel! therein. Extending over'and substantially beyond thesaid outlet 5 and channel I is the closure plate 8, preferably round in form and having its edge bent to form the rim 9, the face of which is levelled to make close contact with the face of the adjoiningwall of the urn. Firmly welded or otherwise securely attached to the underside of the plate 8 is the rounded annular rib l0 positioned and shaped to make accurate engagement with the channel I of the annular ledge 6. Extending through the central portion of the plate 8 is the opening II, the edge of the plate and parts adjacent thereto being bent inwardly to form a seat for the head of the countersunk screw I2, the threaded shank of which extends through said opening and makes threaded engagement with the threaded passageway IS in the rotary pressure bar M; the arms [5 of which bar extend beyond the bottom of the annular ledge 6 andv make contact therewith upon the tightening of said screw I2. In order to limit the rotation of the said bar [4, so that the said screw l2 may be released therefrom or tightened therein, 1 preferably secure to the bottom side of the plate 8, the lug IB downwardly depending therefrom and located to make contact with one arm of said bar upon rotation thereof.
While I have described the form of the outlet 5, closure plate 8 and adjacent parts as round, I do not desire so to limit the scope of my invention, since as is obvious such parts could be made oblong or rectangular without departing from the spirit or purpose of my invention.
To attach my improved closure, the urn 4 having received its desired contents, I loosen the threaded engagement of the shank of the screw I2 with the pressure bar l4, so that the said bar may readily be inclined and passed through the outlet 5, and thereupon the plate is carefully positioned and centered to cover the said outlet. and to extend beyond the same as shown in they drawing; at which time, the screw I2 is tightened through the use of an ordinary screwdriver and the arms iii of said pressure bar brought into contact with the bottom wall of ledge 6; thereby forcing the rib Fl '0 into close engagement "with the channel Ijafr'id bri'hgihgthe rim 9 'iii'toclosectintact with the face of the adjacent wall of said um, and efiec'ting a double hermetic seal of the outlet of said urn. To detach my improved "closure, the screw l2 may be similarly turned and released by a screwdriver, and the losure'pldte 8 readily removed.
My invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof.
