UNITED STATES FFICE.
ATENT JOHN J. AREND, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE E. ROBINSON AND ANDREW A. HALTER, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
KEY-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,623, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed April 20, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. AREND, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city or Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looking Devices for Door-Keys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an appliance which shall be light and portable, readily attached to any key, and which, when attached, shall effectually resist allattempts to turn the key in the lock.
It consists in the mechanism herein de scribed, and pointed out in the claim. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 2 shows the complete device, and Fig. 1 represents it applied to a key resting in a key-hole.
A is a small metallic bar or bolt, terminating in a-thin flattened end, a, to readily enter and rest in any key-hole, which end is preferably deeper than the body of the bar and curved downward on its upper edge to permit it to pass any bands on the key. In the upper edge is alongitudinal channel, V-shaped, and at one side projectsa lug, b. In ahole in the lug b is the hook B, upon the opposite end of which is the thumb-nut O.
In operation, the door being locked, the key (No model.)
is turned partly around in any position, excepting coincident with the key-hole. The bar or bolt A is then placed with its channeled edge upon the shank of the key, pushed forward until its thinner end a, enters the keyhole, and then firmly clamped upon the key by the hook B and thumb-nut O, as shown in Fig. 1.
The size of the hook will depend upon what experience shall determine is best adapted to 40 fit a variety of sizes of keys, and in one edge of the channel in the bar A is a notch to permit the hook to approach more nearly to the bar to grasp keys of small size.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described key-fastener, consisting of a flattened bar, having in one edge a V-shaped channel to receive the key-shank, and at one side a perforated lug or loop, through which is a bolt terminating in a hook at one end, and provided with a thumb-nut at the other, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April," A. D. 1883.
JOHN J. AREND. Witnesses:
C. P. HUMPHREY, E. W. STUART.
