- l ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica JOHN W'. BULGER, .OF EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO.
DOOR-CHEGK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,526, dated December 18, 1883,
Application tiled August l5, 1883., (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JNo/V. BULGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, county 'of Columbiana, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a description of the same, and of the manner of constructing and using the invention, in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of the specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best'inode in which Ihave contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of door-check adapted to maintain a door open at any desired point.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the docr-check applied as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the dooncheck. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of saine.
The doorcheck consists of two parallel straight `iaws, A, united at their front eX- tremities by a joining portion, al These jaws may be .formed at any suitable distance apart, corresponding to di'erent thicknesses of doors. This door-checlr is made as an oblong integral device adapted to rest freely on the floor and to beslid thereon at will. The jaws and their j oining portion have sliding bearing throughout their entire area, and are formed heaviest and broadest at their bottom. They are respectively made so that in vertical cross-section they are in the outline of a right-angle triangle. This permits their inner sides to be substantially vertical, While their outer sides incline outwardly from the top to the bottom. The sides of the door can thus have continuous bearing against the inner vertical sides of the jaws throughout the lattersheight and length; also, the door-check is formed of stable equilibrium, the broad base of it permitting it to be moved freely in a sliding movement over the iioor Without liability to be tipped over.
This doorcheck may be made of any kind of metal, or of glass, rubber, porcelain, or other material. It may be glazed, plated, or covered with cloth.
Vhat I claim is* The herein-described door-check, formed broad at the base and tapering toward the top, the same consisting of the two straight jaws A and the joining portion a, said parts having vertical inner sides and outer sides which incline outwardly from the top to the bottoni, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing to be my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of August, A. D. 1883.
JOHN IW. BULGER.
