SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,499, dated December 18, 1853.

To aZZ whom, it may concern Be it known that we, URBAN E. TURNER and FRANKLIN L. CHAMBERLIX, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new andusefullmprovements in Automatic Oil-Gaps; and we do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in automatic oil-cups; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
This oiler is designed more especially for cranks and places where the oiler receives such motion as will dash the oil to the top of the cup.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of our improved oil-cup. Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views in detail.
A represents the body of the oil-cup, terminating below in a shank that is threaded for attaching the cup to any desired part, and has a hole inside for the discharge of the oil. The upper end of the cup is also threaded, and engages the cap B, that has an orifice on top threaded and filled with the plug 1). O is an inner cap resting on the top of the oil-cup, and adapted, when the parts are screwed home, to be held down firmly on its seat by the outer cap, 33, and provided with the guiding-pin G. This cap is provided with the holes 0, c, and 6-, the former of which is threaded and receives the screw d, that holds the plate D on the cap G. hen the cap 0 is in position, the hole registers with a similar hole in the part A, that leads to the tube E, through which oil is discharged from the cup.

By the motion of the oil-cup the oil is dashed against the bottom of the cap C, and the desired quantity of oil passes up through the hole 0, and through the hole or part of a hole in the plate D, that is over the hole 0, and,
passes off into an annular groove in the top of the cap 0, and from thence through the hole 0* into the tube E, and is discharged from the cup. If an extra quantity of oil is requiredas, for instance, in starting an engine-it may be poured in at the top by removing the plug b, and without disturbing any other part of the mechanism; also, when it is necessary to put oil into the body of the cup, the cap B is removed and the cap 0 turned sidewise on the pin, and without disturbing the relative positions of the parts 0 and D.
Heretofore the mechanism for gaging the quantity of oil to be discharged has usually been at the bottom of the oil-cup, and the minuteness of the orifice required for this purpose rendered it liable to be clogged by sediment or the accumulation of paraiiine or other substance in the oil. W'ith the arrangement of parts here shown no such obstruction can occur; also, the cap 0 may be removed and the orifices examined or cleaned, and without discharging the oil from the cup or changing It maybe added that any device whereby the oil passes downward through the gaging orifice is liable to be clogged, as aforesaid.
What we claim is 1. The combination, with an oil-cup and cover, of an inner cover provided with an adjustable feed-regulating disk for regulating the discharge of oil, substantially as set forth.
The inner cover, 0, held in place by an outer cover and provided with a guiding-pin, and adapted to be turned sidewise to open the cup without disengagement from the cup, in combination with the plate D, substantially as shown and described.
