SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,659, dated April 3, 1888.

' scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machinejournal lubricators-such as are commonly termed oil-cups, and it has for its object to provide a simple and eficient means of accurately regulating the flow of oil to the journal in that class of oil-cups in which an outlet is provided in the bottom of the cup, and the flow of oil is regulated by a needlevalve.
To this end,and to such others as the invention may relate, the same consists in the peculiar combinations, and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and particularly defined in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical section of an oil-cu p or lubrieating reservoir constructed in accordance Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Referring to the details of the drawings, A represents the oil-cup, the body of which is cast with the usual openings, as shown,which serve to afford a view of the interior of the glass cylinder. (Not shown, but which is to be of the usual construction.)
0 is the base, which is provided at its bottom with a tube-screw, D, by which the cup is attached to the journal-box and through which the oil flows from the interior of the cup to the journal. The outlet a is controlled by a centrally-located vertical valve-stern, b, provided at'its lower end with a needle-valve, c. This valve-stein passes centrally through the top of the cup and is provided at its upper end with a milled nut, d. The oil-cup is provided with a cap, F. At a point near the lower end of the valve-stem it is provided with a collar or flange, e, which serves as a bearing for the lower end of the spiral springf, the opposite end of which bears against theunder side of the cap F. The cap F has cast integral therewith a boss or collar, E, which is bored to receive the valve stem cut away at one of its sides, as shown at g, and from one side of the space 9 the height of the collar gradually increases in the form of a spiral to the opposite side of the space, thus forming the cam-surface h, which is provided with a series of notches, The lower edge of the milled nut dat the upper end of the valve-stem is provided with a down wardly-extending pin or projection, 7c,adapted to engage the notches i upon the cam-surface h.
The-boss or collar E is externally threaded to engage the threads of the cover G, which is provided with a suitable handle, H, and thus dispenses with bolts and nuts and avoids the necessity of screw-threading the cup. The
simple screwing of the cover G allows of the ready removal of all the parts.
When it is desired to close the outlet of the cup and thus cut off the supply of oil, the nut d is turned so as to cause the pin 70 to occupy the space 9. The valve-stem is thus forced downward by the action of the spring f, and the needle-valve at its lower end is seated within the valve. If it is desired to open the valve a sufficient distance to permit a limited flow of oil, the milled nut is turned so as to cause the pin 76 to engage with the lower notch in the cam-groove, thus slightly raising the needle-valve from the outlet. By turning the nut so as to cause the pin to engage a notch upon a higher plane, the valve-stem will be lifted higher and the oil allowed to flow more freely.
The cup may be filled either by removing the cap F,or a hole (not shown) may be made through both the cover G and the cap F, which hole can be readily closed after filling the cup by turning the cover a short distance to one side, so that the hole in the cap will no longer register with the hole in the cover, as will be readily understood.
