SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,816, dated December 11, 1883, Application filed September 29, 1883. (X0 model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLEY A. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oentralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Billet and Buckle Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to billet or buckle fasteners, and ithas for its object to fastenbuckles in place without the use ofstitching or riveting, thereby obviating breaking of the fastening devices, while it will afford a saving of labor and time in manufacturing.

To this end it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, whereby superior advantages are attained in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency, all. as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved fastener in its application of fastening buckles to leather. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of Fig. 1.

Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that I have shown my improved fastener as applied to buckles in securing the same to leather; but it will be obvious that the fastener can be used to secure rings, snap-hooks, and similar devices in place by a slight adaptation of parts.

In said drawings, A designates the base-plate of my improved fastener, having an elongated slot, B, extending longitudinally along the same nearly the whole of its length, the front end of said plate being provided with a fluted exten sion, O.- Said extension is provided at its front end with a downwardly-extending curved rim or flange, D, arranged to form. journals for bar E of the U-shaped locking-frame F, the bar E extending transversely across the open end of the said frame and secured in the sides thereof. A tongue or stud, G, projects upwardly from the rear end of extension 0, and serves to secure the ends of the leather together. The base-plate A is provided with side walls, H, inclining downwardly from the front to the rear, said side walls serving to embrace the sides of the leather and hold the same in correct position, and at the rear of the base-plate is erected a loop, J, through which the rear end of the strap is passed.

The manner of applying my fastener is as follows: The end of the leather strap to which the ordinary buckle is attached is beveled off to a thin edge, and is provided with a perforation, a, through which the tongue or stud G projects, the buckle extending out from the front of extension 0. The rear end of the strap passes through the loop J at the rear end of the base-plate, the sides of the strap being embraced by the side walls, H; and by turning the U-shaped frameF untilits upper part bears on the top of the strap, the fastener will be securely held to the strap,while the strap will be prevented from being accidentally disengaged from the fastener, since the upper part of the U shaped frame will hold the strap from moving upward out of its place.

-In some cases it may be desirable to add an additional strap to the buckle, and this can be done by inserting the end of the supplemental strap beneath the main strap, said supplemental strap beingheld thereto by the stud or tongue G entering a perforation therein. 4

It will be seen that the U-shaped frame will securely hold the strap and fastener together and prevent any displacement thereof, and by simply removing the said frame from contact withthe strap the latter can be removed from the fastener.

The device is simple in its construction, efficient in itsoperation, and will obviate the necessity of stitching or riveting the straps togeth er-an expedient now practiced for holding the buckle and strap together. It will save considerable labor and time in manufacturing, as there will be no stitching or riveting, and, consequently,breaking or ripping of the fast ening devices, for the buckle will be avoided. The fastener can be made from any suitable material, and can be readily adapted to hold rings, snap-hooks, and similar devices in place. Itis obvious that various modifications may be made in the foregoing without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a fastener for buckles, &c., abase-plate provided with a loop at one end, a tongue or stud projecting up from said base-plate, and a U shaped frame journaled at the other end, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein-described fastener for buckles, &c., comprising the base-plate having an up- Wardly-proj ecting tongue or stud, aloop at the rear end of the base-plate, side walls extending up from the same, and a U-shaped locking-frame journaled in the forward end of the said plate, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
