UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNHARD VOGEL, OFBALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SASH-CORD FASTENER.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,732, dated December 4, 1883.
Application led September 24, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNHARD VOGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Cord Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates .to a sash-cord fastener, the object being to provide ametal device for attachment to the sash so contrived that while it holds the knot of the sash-cord sufficient space is provided below the knot-holding device for readily drawing thev knot well down, thereby to fully release the knot and render it convenient and easy to disconnect the cord.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a view of the cord-fastener. Fig. 2 is a View of part of a sash, a portion being broken away, and showing a sectional view of the fastener in position. Fig. 3 is a view showing the cord-fastener slightly modified.
The letter A designates a fiat plate, made of cast metal, for attachment to the sash, and the knot-holder b b projects from the front side of this plate. In practice, and as indicated in the drawings, the length of this plate is nearly fourY times as great as the width, and each end of this plate is rounded or half-cir cular in form, as at c. This feature is of consequence, as thereby the mortise d, with rounded ends d', which is Inade in the sash for the occupancy ofthe fastener, may be formed by a laterally-cutting bit, which is a cheap method.
The knot-holder consists of two lugs, b, attached to the side of the plate at its upper end. A space or slot, e, between the lugs is for the cordf. The under side of the lugs bevel or incline downward from the plate to the front of the lug, as at g. Thereby the knot of the cord, which is held below the lugs, will draw up and back into the opening g in the plate. The beveled or inclined under sides of the lugs may also,- as in the present instance, be concaved, to aord still more room for the knot. The oblong-shaped opening g extends lengthwise of the plate from the knot-holder at the upper end downward. This opening, besides making the casting lighter, gives room for the knot and facilitates drawing the knot down from the holder when it is desired to disconnect the cord.
In the device as shown in Fig. 1, the upper surface of the knot-holder is rounded or halfcircular in form, as at c', and when thus made one screw-hole, h, atthe lower end of the plate is all that is required. The cord-fastener occupies the mortise d in the sash, and a screw, h, holds it in position. under the holder, and the cord passes along the usual groove, z', in the sash. By this construction a short end, f', of the cord may hang pendent below the knot, and said end may be grasped conveniently by the fingers, and serve to draw the knot down to release it from the holder b. The cord may then be disconnected.
Where the device is made as shown in Fig.
The knot is fastened 8, a second screw-hole, h2, may be formed at Y the upper end above the knot-holder.
Sash cord fasteners have heretofore had knot-holders in the form of a slotted semi-cylindrical shell inserted in a circular hole bored in the sash. My fastener has the advantage over such of admitting more easily the release of the knot from the holder.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States* A sash cord fastener consisting of a fiat plate, A, having rounded or half-circular ends c, and having an oblong-shaped opening eX- tending lengthwise and provided at its front side and upper end with knot-holder lugs b b, the under sides of which bevel or incline downward from the plate, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affixv my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNHARD VOGEL.
