APPARATUS FOR WORKING ANCHORS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,965, dated July S, 1860.
To all who/m, it may concern:
ABe it known that I, ANGUs CAMPBELL, of Jersey City, yin vthe county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented and made certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Dropping Anchors; and I do hereby 'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part-of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is a plan of a portion of the bulwarks with my apparatus fitted in place. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, is an elevation of the stopper on the cat head, Fig. 4:, is a view of the tripping apparatus, and Fig. 5, is a cross section of the same.

The nature of my said invention consists in a rolling block placed on the bulwarks provided with a vertical hinged plate which protects the edge of the bulwarks from the flukes of the anchor when dropped, and also acts to aid in hoisting the anchor by preventing the flukes becoming caught as they are raised above the bulwarks and rest upon the rolling block; I also make use of a peculiarly fitted chain which holds the anchor rmly to place, but is self acting when the anchor is dropped and liberates the same as it is cast off; I also arrange my.

In previous instances where apparatus has been used for casting the anchor flukes from oft1 the edge of the bulwarks, the anchor was liable to swing and lurch at the risk of injuring the vessel; I provide a shank painter chain that is so fitted that the anchor can be lowered gradually.

To -afford additional security and prevent the anchor slipping off the block cl, I provide the chain g thatis attached at 4, to the block cl, and provided with a ring at the other end passing up onto a pendent pin 5, from the bulwarks.
The anchor being hoisted into place while the block d is turned down the chain g hangs loose and is passed over the anchor and the ringv drawn onto the pin 5, and the turning of the block Z back to place tightens this chain, securely holding the anchor; but so soon as the reverse movement takes place, the chain is slackened and slips off the pin 5, and the anchor is free to fall. The speed of this movement in dropping the anchor can be regulated by the clamping or friction screw 2.
The ring of the anchor h, is sustained by the chain z', to the cat head b, and le, is a stopper on said cat head taking the anchor ring chain i. This stopper 7c, is formed with a slide 6, having an inclined end taking the T shaped head 7 of the chain z', or said inclined end might enter an elongated link. At the end of the slide 6, a pin 8, is inserted, which while in place effectually prevents the anchor being dropped.
9, is a lever in the stopper 7c, the upper part of which takes the slide 6, and the lower end a chain Z, that passes through sheaves l0, 1l, 12, and terminates by an attachment to the block d, (see Fig. Vhen the rolling block d, retains the anchor this chain Z, is tight but-when the anchor is cast off this chain is loosened hence if the pin 8, is withdrawn the end piece 7 of the chain .2', will in consequence of the weight and the inclined shape, force back the slide 6, and the cat head chain z', will draw out of the ring as the anchor drops bodily into llO the water without any manual labor applied to the anchor itself. If however it is intended simply to cast the anchor off the bulwarks and let it hang I allow the pin 8 to remain in place so that the cat head stopper may be effectual, and I pass the chain m, around the shank of the anchor and hook it over the pin 13, so that when the anchor is cast over the shank is in the bight of the chain. This chain is fitted so as to be paid out by the chain wheel n, that is within the block d, and is turned gradually by the worm 0, and handle p, which worm acts on a wheel 1^, on the same shaft (s) as the chain wheel n, by this means the anchor can be lowered gradually until it hangs vertically under the cat head, see Figs. 4L and 5).
Having thus described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The plate f, hinged to the rolling block d, for the purposes and as specified.
2. The chain g attached at one end to the rolling block d, and at the other end taking 25 the pin 5, for holding the anchor in place or disconnecting, by the self acting movement, in casting anchor as set forth.
3. The slide 6, and T shaped end 7 to the chain z', for liberating the ring of the anchor 30 when the slide 6, is allowed to move as set forth.
4:. The combination of the stopper 7c, and rolling block 0l, by means of the chain Z,
whereby both ends of the anchor can be 35 simultaneously liberated, as described and shown.
