Description

May 13, 1924. 1,493,489
. J. A. HOLZAPFEL V ANCHOR Filed may 15. 1922 IN VEN TOR.
Jbhn A. Ho/za nfa fW i A TTORNEYS Patented May 13, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOHN A. HOLZAPFEL, OF JACKSON, .MIQHIGAN.
ANCHOR;
Application filed May 15, 1922. Serial No. 561,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat 1, JOHN A. HOLZAPFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in'Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anchors.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved anchor which is well adapted for anchoring row boats or fishing boats and holds securely on beds of different character.
Second, to provide an improved anchor having these advantages which has large holding capacity in proportion to. its size and weight.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a side view of my improved anchor in upright position.
Fig. II is a side view with theanchor plate shown in vertical central section.
Fig. III is a bottom view of the anchor plate. 1
In the drawing similar referencecharacters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, my improved anchor comprises an elongated or shaft like body 1 tapered upwardly and-terminate ing in an eye 2 for the attachment of the anchor rope or cable. At the lower end of the body 1 is an annular shoulder or stop 3, there being awconical or pointed tip 4 below this shoulder. The concavo convex plate 5 normally rests on this shoulder but is free to move longitudinally of the body 1. This plate is preferably provided with holes 6 and with an upwardly projecting flange 7 around its opening 8.
In use, when the anchor is dropped to the bed of the lake or stream the'pointed end will embed in the bed of the lake but, should a lateral pull occur, the plate 5 will engage, the plate adjusting itself. on:
the shank according to the depth to which the body is embedded and canting or tilting laterally to take a secure hold. is, however, easily disengaged when pulled upwardly, as in hauling in. A further advantage is that the parts are very economical to produce, as they can be readily molded.
While my improved anchor is especially designed by me for small boats and launches it is also desirable for larger craft.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. An anchor comprising an upwardly The hanger tapered shank having a shoulder" at its lower end anda conical tip below the shoulder, and an upwardly facing concavo convex plate loosely mounted on said shank and adapted to normally rest on said shoulder,
said plate having an upwardly projecting flange around its opening.
2. An anchor comprising an upwardly tapered shank having a shoulder at its shoulder, and an upwardly facing concavo convex plate loosely mounted on said shank.
and adapted to normally rest on said shoulder. I h
3. An anchor comprising an elongated lower end and a conical tip below the shank having a stop at its lower end and pointed below the stop, and an upwardly facing concavo convex plate loosely mounted on said shank and adapted to normally rest on said stop, said plate. having an up- An anchor comprising an elongated shank having a stop at its lower end and pointed below the stop, and an upwardly wardly projecting flange around its openfacing concavo convex plate loosely mountv ed on said shank and, adapted to normally rest on said stop.
5. An anchor comprising an upwardly tapered shank having. ar'shoulder, at its lower end and a conical tip below the shoulder, and a grapple member; loosely mounted on said shank for rotativej and lonby permitting the tilting of the grapple to normally rest on said stop, the bore of member while resting upon said shoulder. the grapple member beingsueh as to permit 7. An anchor comprising an elongated tilting of the grapple member While rest 10 shank having a stop shoulder at the lower ing upon said stop. I
5 end thereof, and a grapple member loosely In witness whereof, I have hereunto set mounted on said shank having longitudinal my hand and seal. and rotative movement thereon and adapted JOHN A. HOLZAPFEL. [1,. 15.]
