8 Claims. (Cl. 317-203) This invention relates to magnetizing apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus for magnetizing telephone receiver magnets.
An object of the invention is to provide new and improved magnetizing apparatus.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide new and improved apparatus for magnetizing telephone receiver magnets.
A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus for automatically clamping telephone receiver magnets between pole pieces, and magnetizing and testing the magnets.
An apparatus illustrating certain features of the invention may include means for moving a magnet to a position between opposed pole pieces and simultaneously clamping the magnet securely between the pole pieces. The pole pieces then are energized electromagnetically to magnetize the magnet and it is removed therefrom.
A complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from the following detailed description of a magnetizing apparatus forming a specific embodiment thereof, when read in conjunction with the appended drawings, in which Fig. l is a top plan View of an apparatus forming one embodiment of the invention with portions of the apparatus broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, there is shown an apparatus for magnetizing telephone receiver magnets 9. The apparatus includes a dial provided with holders 11 slidable along guideways 12 formed on the dial or turntable 10 and normally held in retracted positions by leaf spring latches 8. A feed guideway 15 is provided into which magnet assemblies 9 are brought by a conveyor and are slid to a holder 11, and are dropped over bosses 16 thereon. The dial is automatically indexed step-by-step in 90 steps and moves the magnet assembly 9 from the loading station to a position adjacent to a magnetizing unit 20 of a well known type at a level at which the bottom of the holder 11 is movable onto the top of a fixed pole piece 21. A pole 22 having a socket 23 therein is mounted on pivoted arms 24.
After dial 10 moves each holder 11 to the station at the magnetizing unit 20, a pneumatic cylinder 19 and a piston 25 are actuated automatically by limit switch or cam-operated means (not shown) to move the holder 11 radially outwardly from the dial 10 by means of a lever 26 pivoted on a fixed pin 27 and secured at one end thereof to the piston 25 and carrying a roller 28 on the other end thereof. The roller projects upwardly into an arcuate groove 31 in a pusher block 32 fixed to the bottom of the holder 11. As the assembly 9 is moved to a position under the socket 23 in the pole piece 22, an adjustment screw 31 mounted on the top of the holder 11 engages the pole piece 22 to force it along with the assembly 9 against the action of biasing springs 33 and the assembly 9 is wedged very tightly between the pole pieces 21 and 22. As the pole pieces 21 and 22 lock or clamp the assembly therebetween, the lever 26 actuates a limit switch 34 to actuate a magnetizing unit 20 of a well known type to magnetize the assembly 9. After the magnetizing unit magnetizes the magnet of the assembly 9, it actuates the cylinder 19 to retract the piston 25 to retract the holder 11 and the dial 10 then is indexed to move the assembly to a testing station 35. If the assembly passes the test at the testing station 35 by a test set 40 at that station, the test set does not actuate a cylinder 36, and the assembly 9 is moved by the dial 10 to a deflector 37 and is deflected into a chute 38. If the assembly 9 does not pass the test, the test set actuates the cylinder 36 to swing an arm 39 into the path of the assembly to pull the assembly into a rejection chute 41.
The above-described apparatus automatically loads and unloads the assemblies, clamps each assembly between the pole pieces and magnetizes it, tests each assembly and assorts the assemblies into rejected and accepted groups. Each assembly is rapidly clamped between and freed from the pole pieces.
It is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are simply illustrative of the application of the principles of the invention. Numerous other arrangements may be readily devised by those skilled in the art which will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
l. A machine for magnetizing magnets comprising a dial having radial guideways in the upper face thereof, a plurality of holders mounted slidably in the guideways and movable between retracted positions and extended positions located beyond the periphery of the dial, a fixed pole piece located beyond the periphery of the dial just below the path of the holder when the holder is extended, a movable pole piece, pivotal means normally holding the movable pole piece in a position over the dial and movable to a clamping position, means for advancing the dial to move each holder adjacent to the pole pieces, means for moving each holder from its retracted position to its extended position when the holder is adjacent to the pole pieces, and means for moving the movable pole piece with the holder to its clamping position.
2. A machine for magnetizing magnets comprising a guideway, a holder mounted slidably in the guideway and movable between a retracted position and extended position, a fixed pole piece located beyond the guideway just below the path of the holder when the holder is extended, a movable pole piece, pivotal means normally holding the movable pole piece in a position over the guideway and movable to a clamping position in which the movable pole piece is positioned over the fixed pole piece, and means carried by the holder for moving the movable pole piece to the position over the fixed pole piece.
3. In a magnetizing apparatus, a carrier, an article holder movably mounted on said carrier, a first magnetizing element positioned below and spaced from the edge of the carrier, a second movably mounted magnetizing element positioned above the path of movement of the article holder by the carrier, means for advancing the carrier to position the article holder in alignment with the second magnetizing element, means for advancing the article holder relative to the carrier into alignment with the first magnetizing element, and means on the article holder for engaging and moving the second magnetizing element into alignment with the first magnetizing element.
4. In" a-magnetizing'" apparatus, a support having a guidewayformed therein, an articleholder mounted for sliding movement in the guideway, means for retaining the holder within the guideway, a first magnetizing element-into alignment with the firstmagnetizing element;

6. A magnetizing apparatus, comprising a fixed pole piece; a'movable pole'piece, lever means mountingthemovable pole piece for movement from a retracted posi tion to-anoperative position injuxtapositionrelativeto the-fixed pole piece, a work holder, means for moving said work-holder to a position over-the 'fiXed pole piece;
and means operable by the work holder for swinging themovable pole piece to the' operative "position"'as'the' work holder is moved to a position over the fixed pole piece.
7. A magnetizing apparatus, comprising a first pole piece, a second pole piece, means mounting the first pole piece for swinging movement from a retracted position to a position over the secondpole piece, a slide for holding a work piece, means for moving the slide over the second pole piece, and means operable by'the slide for actuating the mounting" means to swing/thefirst pole pieceto the position over the second'pole piece.
8. A magnetizing apparatus, comprising a fixed -pole piece, a movable pole piece, means mounting the movable pole" piece for" pivotal movemenf-from' a "retracted position to an operative position in alignment relative to the fixed pole piece, a holder, means for moving the holder over the fixed pole piece, and adjustment screw means carried by the holder for swinging the movable pole piece to its operative position as the holder is moved over the" 'fiXed -'po'le-- piece.
