UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- LEOPOLD S. SAMUEL, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY.
CARD FOR BOOK-MARKS AND FOR ADVERTISING MEDIUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.` 289,566, dated December 4, 1883,
` Application filed June 25, 1883.
t To @ZZ whom tm/ay concern..-
Be it known that-I, LEOPOLD S. SAMUEL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Newark,-in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cards for Book-Marks and for Advertising Mediums; and I do `hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novelty acceptable to young people and adapted to meet the wants of advertisers; and it consists .in the arrangements and combinaL tions of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claims.
The accompanying drawing indicates aplan of an advertising-card or book-mark, A being a card having a suitable amount of space on it for printed matter, such as an advertisement or a motto, b b. Said card is perforated, as at c, and to it is attached, by an eyelet, cl, or other fastener, arms e, `adapted to revolve on said ey elet, and carrying disks f, of glass, gelatine, or other colored and transparent` substance. By revolving the arms the disks may be alternately or together brought over the perforation or perforations, so that on looking through the glass or transparent material objects will be given the color of the said transparent matter, as will be understood. By combining two or more different colors secondary colors may be produced, in almost endless variety. The colors may be attached to the card and be adapted to project over the edges thereof', and the perforation c be dispensed with, without departing from the spirit of my invention. When gelatine isused, I prefer to` cover the same with mica to prevent the hand from marring the surface, -and thus reducing the transparency lof the same.
To increase the value of the device in the childish mind, so that the same will be retained longer and the value of the device as an advertising medium be increased, Iprovide (Model.)
a background, y, of some contrasting color, and with or without a design imprinted thereon, and also lettered papers h, which parts g h are suitably gummed on their reverse sides, and thus adapted .to be secured to the card. From a collection of such parts g h the child may select the letters of his name, or make the same to the card A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention isl. An advertising-card, A, provided with colored transparent and adjustable parts e, substantially as andfor the purposes set forth and shown. l
`2. In combination, the card A and pivoted ferently colored transparent matter thereon.`
5". An advertising-card having parts g and h secured thereto, and having a perforation, c, therein and pivoted transparent portion thereon, as set forth.
6. In combination, the advertising-card having an imprint impressed thereon, and a background, y, and lettered portions 7i, gummed, glued, cemented, or otherwise secured to said card A by an adhesive-substance, as herein set forth.
lother selection, as he may desire, and secure portions of transparent colored matter, sub-` 7. In combination, the parts g h, secured by an adhesive substance to the card A, and
said card A provided with a transparent and i have hereunto set my hand this 15th day` of 95 June, 1883.
