, HAROLD F. SAYIER IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent Ofitice 2,895,486 Patented July 21, 1959 This invention relates to a hair dye applicator and is more particularly directed to a combination hair dye applicating and hairseparating device.
The present invention is an improvement over my copending application Serial Number 467,139 filed on November 5, 1954, and now abandoned, wherein I show a hair dye applicating device. In using that device, an operator holds the applicator in one hand and a comb in the other, the comb parting the hair and holding same while the operator swabs the exposed hair with the hair dye applicator in the dyeing operation. All of the above functions are accomplished by the present device with the use of only a single hand leaving the operators other hand free.
Therefore, a principal object of the present invention is to provide a combination hair dye applicating and hair separation device which requires the use of only one hand to accomplish the dyeing of a persons hair.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a hair dye applicator described as above which permits an operator to separate the hair in an upward sweep of the device along a persons scalp and dye the hair during the downward or return movement of the device.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination hair dye applicating and hair separating device which is simple and inexpensive in construction and may be readily cleaned for reuse.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a hollow cylindrically shaped cotton swab formed about a sleeve which permits the ready insertion of the applicator device therein.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as ex pressed in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination hair dye applicating device embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a hair dye applicating rod and pad partially broken away as seen when removed from the container or bottle.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3--3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Figure 2 except with the pad removed.
Figure 6 is a side view of the pad partially broken away.
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 77 of Figure 6.
2 Figure 8 is a perspective view of a hair combing rod.
Figure 9 is a view similar to that of Figure 5 showing a pad being positioned on the hair dye applicating rod.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the hair dye applicating device shown consists of a pliable bottle or container 10'made of plastic and the like having a neck portion 11 on whoseoutward end threads 12 are formed. The neck portion 11 is provided with a discharge duct 13 communicating with an enlarged duct 14 whose function is explained hereinafter.
Threadedly mounted on the threads 12 of the neck portion 11 is an applicator rod 15 at its base portion 16. A discharge duct 17 which extends along the full length of applicator 15 to the forward end portion 18 as at 19 where the duct 17 'is blocked off, the duct 17 being of substantially the same diameter as the discharge duct 13. Fluid flowing through the discharge duct 13 is discharged through a plurality of orifices 20 contained along the forward portion 18 of the applicator rod '15. The orifices 20 are symmetrically disposed about and, along the forward portion 18 so as to distribute the dye equally onto a cylindrically shaped pad or swab 21 made of felt or cotton having a cylindrical bore 25. The pad 21 is maintained securely in position on the applicator rod 15 by a plurality of prongs 22 extending longitudinally and forwardly on a backing disc 23 mounted on the applicator 15 at approximately the mid-length thereof. The prongs 22, upon becoming inserted into the body of the pads 21 prevent the pads 21 from slipping off inadvertently from the applicator rod 15 and also from rotating on the applicator rod when in use as is explained in greater detail hereinafter.
In order to prevent the deformation of the cotton pad 21 and their bores 25 when handled for packing, shipping, etc. the pads 21 are manufactured with a hollow cylindrical member or sleeve 24 positioned therein, which sleeve 24 remains in the bore 25 until removed by the end 18 of the applicator rod 15 as the pads 21 are slid into position thereon, the outer diameter of the forward end portion 18 being slightly larger than the inner di-. ameter of the sleeve 24. The end 19 is pointed to render it easy to fit the applicator rod 15 into the hollow end of the sleeve 24 in pushing the sleeve 24 out of the pad 21 as the pad 21 is slid forwardly into its proper position on the forward end portion 18 of applicator rod 15.,
Securely fixed on the neck portion 11 of the bottle 10 is a base portion 26 of a hair separating rod 27. The base portion 26 is provided with a bore 28 to permit insertion of the base portion 26 on the neck 11 so as to become wedged between the base 16 of the applicator rod 15 and a shoulder 29 formed on the neck portion 11. In the normal use of the applicating device, the pliable bottle 10 is filled with hair dye, the hair separating rod is positioned on the neck 11 of the applicator bottle 10 and the applicating rod 15 is threaded on the neck 11. Then a cylindrical pad 21 having a sleeve 24 is taken and by means of the free end 19 of the applicator rod 15, the sleeve 24 is removed from the pad 21 as the pad 21 is slid over the end 18 of the applicator rod 15. The prongs 22 become pierced into the body of the pad 20 to hold the pad 21 securely on the applicator 15. Now the operator grasps the bottle 10 in one hand and places the hair separating rod 27 on a persons scalp sliding it along the scalp to separate the hair. With a part formed in the hair, the operator now squeezes the bottle 10 to cause the dye to flow through the ducts 114, 13, 17, the orifices 20 and become absorbed by the pad 21. Now the operator dabs the separated hair with pad 21 laden with dye as he moves along the previously formed part.
This permits the operator to dye the hair close to the scalp without permitting the scalp to become discolored by the dye as he uses the hair separating rod 27 to steady his hand while the pad 21 moves along the part in contact with the hair close to the roots.
By providing an enlarged duct 14 adjacent the duct 13 which is approximately equal to the duct 17, the tendency is reduced for dye to leak at the juncture of the base 16 of the applicator 15 and the neck 11 of the bottle 10.
After being used, the applicator device may be readily disassembled, the pad 21 discarded and the remaining parts cleaned and washed ready to be used again with a difi'erent colored dye, if desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents of the United States is:
A combination hair dye applicating device comprising a container, a threaded neck portion mounted on said container, said neck portion having a discharge duct, an elongated member threadedly mounted at one end on said neck portion, said elongated member having a duct extending along said member and communicating with said first named discharge duct, a wall portion mounted across said duct at said other end of said elongated memher to prevent the flow of fluid therethrough, said elongated member having a plurality of radially disposed discharge orifices along said other end, a stop member mounted on said elongated member between said ends, a plurality of prongs mounted on said stop member extending longitudinally in spaced relation to said elongated member and extending in the direction of said other end of said elongated member, a cylindrical pad mounted on said other end of said elongated member in contact relation with said prongs and said stop member and an elongated rod mounted on said neck portion and extending in parallel and spaced relation with said elongated member.
